I'm notifying my boss and my bosses boss that I either want to transfer or I'm quitting. We just opened up a new telemetry unit/stable vent unit that may need some help. I'd rather not quit just yet, I need some oral surgery done, plus I've been there 10 years and make great money, and get great vacations.
However, I can no longer work in such an environment that I work on.
I'm so nervous. I'm used to going with the flow, being used and abused and not standing up for myself.
It should would help to know that there are some allnurses.com folk out there cheering me on.

I know it is hard but hang in there till you can transfer. I certainly understand that as seniority, good pay and vaca are so nice to have.
When do you plan on asking to transfer?

I wish I was there with you to give you support at work. What is wrong with these people that that start to harrass a fellow employee when they see they are struggling. The last six months I worked I had a few people practically carry me around the building in attempt to keep me going cause they did not want me to leave. When I think of their kindness I get tears in my eyes. I can't believe the crap you had to put up with.

Whew! I'm back. Unfortunately, given the short notice no one could meet with me. But I did bend the ear of one of the administators. She gently questioned weather I was running, rather than dealing. I admitted I was running, but life is too short, and there are so many other jobs to be unhappy.
She did pay me the biggest compliment. She said I was the best charge nurse in that hospital on night shift and I could write my ticket on any unit. That they would create a position if there wasn't one. Of course, she's just talking, but it was nice to hear.
My bosses boss was out of town, so I left my letter of intent with the Vice President of Nursing, the highest of the high, who is covering her.
I did put in a transfer request with Human Resouces. So the ball is out there in their court.
Thanks again for listening to all my ramblings, for your support. For me to change, to be assertive is nerve wracking.

It's really up to management. When you transfer, if you are in good standing and the manager on the unit you wish to go to accepts you, your current manager can hold you 30 days, but no longer. One of our charge nurses is on vacation the entire month of January. I told them I would stay until then if they wanted me to. However, I also told them I would quit the hospital in two weeks if there wasn't another position to transfer to.

Bravo, 3rdshiftguy!!
Speaking only for myself, I had to lose a couple of really toxic workplaces before I found my happy lil niche, and though I lost some money, and some sleep before it all came about, it was well worth the great feeling of confidence that sticking to my guns ultimately gave me.
You can do it! We're all rooting for ya!!

Sending you blessings on wafts of cinnamon incense.
May you be pleasantly surprised at how many wonderful things come about as a result of your standing up for yourself and speaking your truth.
