Winter Hands

It's that time again when all us nursies with our million times a day handwashing routine begin to suffer. My hands are getting chapped already. I have always had dry skin and it gets terrible when that dry, cold air hits. I have tried every different handlotion under the sun. My current regime is Curel unscented between each handwashing at work. A tube in my purse when I'm out, and a tube of aveeno oatmeal lotion next to the sink at home. When it gets really bad, I grease my hands up with vaseline and sleep wearing cotton gloves. Oh, and I never expose my hands to the cold air unless I can help it. I bought myself a pair of wool-lined leather driving gloves 2 years ago and I love them.

All great advise~~~

Be sure to completely dry your hands before putting gloves on! As NurseGirlKaren said~

Keep bottle of which ever lotion works for you with you at all times!,,, At work,,, in the car,,, in your purse,,, at home,,,

Bag Balm,, Vasoline,,,Crisco,,, what ever works,,, with gloves at night,,,,

My hands got so bad I couldn't move them without them cracking,,, bleeding,,, I follow the above,,,, haven't (knocking on wood now~~~~~ ) had a problem for few years,,,,,

The complete drying after washing~ seems to have been most effective

I'm a newbie! To this board and nursing. My hands wouldn't survive winter without Avon's Silicone Glove. An application lasts through a handwashing. I love it. I also use the generic hydrophilic when they get really bad.

I grease mine up with hand cream and then I dip them into my wax bath, then into plastic bags for 30 minutes. that helps get them into shape and very soothing! When I'm sitting around I will rub either vaseline or whatever good lotion I have around into them continuously.

MomNRN,

Welcome to the boards!

MomNRN........I, too, welcome you to the Allnurses.com family of great people! :balloons: :kiss

Pappy.....my Mom pushed Crisco Shortening at us kids all while we were growing up to use on our skin in the winter months. Her mom......that would be my favorite granny......did the same for them when they were growing up. I haven't used it as an adult though, but your post brought back those memories of yesteryear. :D

I carry lotion in my purse and use it after every handwashing. I keep lotion in my kitchen and bathrooms for the same reasons. Whenever I worked hospital nursing, I was the nurse who bought the handlotion so the entire staff never ran out. I would get a big bottle of great handlotion, and put it on the sink near the nurses station. No one ever took it home with them either. :kiss

I've used the vaseline...gloves treatment, too. :nurse:

Thanks a-rose!
