Do you remember your 1st patient ever?

My 1st rotation in school was at a LTC. I dreaded it, I wanted to work peds at a hospital, not take care of "old people". Her name was Minnie and I was terrified. The 1st thing I had to do was try and get that black tarry sticky iron induced stool off of her skin. It was everything I dreaded. By the end of the day I realized this was going to be my niche. I enjoyed talking to her and her roommate, Mrytle. Mrytle was a little jealous that Minnie had her own private nurse, so I also did things for her. When I left the room one time I heard Mrytle say, "She sure is a nice little fat thing isn't she?" My very 1st patient was the one that changed my direction in nursing and I thank her for that everyday.

My 1st patient was an older lady with a brain tumor. She was scheduled for a craniotomy on our first day together. It was her birthday and all she wanted was a piece of birthday cake.

The craniotomy was cancled late that afternoon, and I told her family to bring in the cake.

My first clinical was the nursing home unit at the VA. I was jealous of the people who got to go to the hospital for clinicals. But it was a great place to gain basic skills at first.

My first patient was elderly but not feeble. We spent most of the day talking about his WWII experiences.

Specializes in OB, ortho/neuro, home care, office.

Was a Colon Cancer patient who had a bowel resection and had retainers on his stomach. It wasn't a pretty sight at all. I was very nervous but came to find out he lived 6 miles from me (which was a surprise since I personally lived the furthest from school). With this in common we struck up a conversation which made me feel much more comfortable. Since that time I have never looked back.

Specializes in OB/GYN,L&D,FP office,LTC.

My first patient was a man in DT's. He was in four point leather restraints.

He also had a condom catheter. Well being a young inexpierenced student nurse I was pretty clueless. The staff nurses gave me a few "tips" on removing, cleaning and reappling. I won't go into too many details...it was not a positive experience. I just could not get the thing to go on properly! I left the unit that day wondering why I EVER thought nursing was for me!

My first pt as a student was a tiny, blind 104 yr old lady. She had met the president before, neat lady.

My first pt as a Nurse was a guy (inmate) that broke his back playing football in the yard. He had his own locked & loaded guard & everything! :D

I am a third semester nursing student....My first patient ever was deceased. Yep, that's right. I arrived at my first clinical as a nursing student and got my assignment. However, to my dismay the patient that I was assigned to had just passed away moments before I went to meet her. So the first thing that I learned as a nursing student was post-mortem care. SG

I have no idea. :)

I don't remember the first patient, but remember my first day at my first job as a RN. I worked at an inpatient psychiatric adolescent unit. The psychiatrist came on the unit to make rounds and introduced himself to me and was very nice. I was so relieved to be working with such a friendly doc!! He even then asked me to come to his office for a moment. He asked me what brought me there....(can you see where this is going?)...Again, naive me....thinking what a nice person....he really cares about the staff here. Nope.....well he did, but he actually thought I was a new patient. I am not sure I ever lived that moment down. For the next two years I worked there, it was a running joke.

Oh I thought he was trying to make a pass at you! :chuckle You must have been very young to look like a teenager.

Specializes in NICU.

My first pt in clinicals was a woman waiting to go to the OR for her liver transplant. She was young, in her mid forties, with two little kids. My partner and I decided that she really didn't need us to practice taking vitals on her, so we just sat and talked with her all morning. That was the most valuable thing, since I'm much better at skills stuff than therapeutic communication. She was so scared.

Specializes in M/S, OB, Ortho, ICU, Diabetes, QA/PI.

my first patient was a lady in her '70's who weighed approximately 400 lbs and that was down from her admission weight - she was the grandmother of someone a few years behind me in high school

I had to do a complete bed-bath on her and I had a horrible time of it - you know how hard it is to do on ladies that big - none of the other nurses would help me and my fellow students were knee-deep in their own patients so I was on my own

I went home after clinicals and almost cried - I said to my mom "I don't think I can do this" and she said "Why not? Anything else that comes along can only be easy compared to that!" and she was right!! (like moms are most of the time :coollook: )

that was almost 15 years ago and I think of it whenever I have a really difficult patient - those patients make the next ones easier!
