These work for me:
This two shall pass.
Only ____ hours/minutes until the shift is over.
I only have one set of hands.
A nice warm bed is waiting for me.

working 12 hour shifts if it's a bad night I don't think about the hours in the total time I break each shift down into 3 shifts (sort of dumb I know but hey it works for me) at the start I have 4 hours til the next increment, then 4 to the next one, then wooohooo I get to go home.

being a new nurse, i often think that the lord is teaching me to handle different experiences:
romans 8:28
and we know that in all things god works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

"I can do anything for just 8 hours"
"In the light of eternity how much will this matter?"
Also, when putting in 8 hours of hell with an obnoxious labor patient I will keep reminding myself "After today I will never have to lay eyes on this person again!" and I manage to stay with her and give her my best care.

we practice the wal-mart greeters mantra,"Hi welcome to Wal-Mart, would you like a buggy or a basket" Also have started a countdown sheet for really bad days, write down the hours and cross them off as the shift draws to a close.
But my favorite it Oxygen is my friend... ya know we tend to hold our breaths when things get rough!!
