What jobs did you do before nursing?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

For a short time 20 years ago I cut hair, I consider myself a "people person". I also worked as a medical assistant (certified ophthamic assistant to eye surgeons, and Lasik technician) for 13-14 years so this helped me feel more comfortable (a little) as a new grad because of previous experience interacting with doctors and patients.

Just curious what other jobs you did before going into the nursing field? Do you think your previous experiences help you now?

We have two of these threads now?

I served in the Air Force as a Nuclear Launch Officer. I separated after 8 years, joined the Air National Guard, in which my unit conducts satellite operations. I started nursing school when I switched to the Guard, graduated in May 2015 and passed my NCLEX on 28 Oct 2015. I'm excited to start this new career!

Cheers!

I don't want to state my exact profession since it's unusual and most people have never met someone with my old job position (and they always think it sounds interesting and want to know more about, but it was usually very boring). I'm a second degree student because I realized I couldn't do an office job. With my old job I did research and wrote reports while sitting in a windowless office all day long. My job had a large legal component to it and there was absolutely no teamwork unless you were briefly consulting another coworker for help. When I started I spent months in training learning all the laws and legal technicalities. It was awful and I hated it, so I quit and went back to school for nursing. I did other odd jobs before I started that career- nannying, retail, administrative assistant, etc.

Worked in the kitchen at a ski resort at age 13. Continued until 20.

Worked as a lifeguard from age 15. Continued until 21.

Worked in fast food. Team member to Shift Lead to Senior Assistant Manager. Was offered a store, turned it down. This was from age 16 to 27.

What fast food restaurant, you might ask? Let's just say that when it came to swaddling babies, I was a pro. They're so much like burritos.
