Sign-on Bonuses Are Alive and Well

I have been noticing one-off blips periodically, but here is clear evidence that the shortage of experienced specialty nurses is very real in the Houston area.

Houston Methodist is offering $10k sign-on bonuses for some 125 specialty jobs. Here's the link Hospital and Nursing Jobs in Houston, Texas | Houston Methodist Jobs

I was a bit surprised to see Clinical Documentation Specialists on the list.

Sounds tempting, but I can't go back to those unsafe nurse patient ratios I had when I was in Texas before. (Granted, it was a small county hospital, not a big hospital like Houston.) That and I don't think I could take the humidity anymore. :(

Haven't seen anything that pretty in a long, long time!

No HD jobs :(

I looked in the mirror this morning, so I'm good.

How is this hospital? Is it a crap hole with lots of turnover? Furthermore, what are the terms and conditions for receiving the bonus? The previous hospital I worked at is offering sign on bonuses in exchange for 2-3 years of service. Because nurses leave as fast as they join, because it's a rotten organization. Rotten to the core.

Specializes in Specializes in L/D, newborn, GYN, LTC, Dialysis.

Hmmm. Always a catch. It's not for nothing that sign-on bonuses are offered at certain places.

Specializes in Nursing Professional Development.

What is the salary like at that hospital? Anybody know?

Specializes in Postpartum, Med Surg, Home Health.

I wonder what the pay is and how long the contract is!

There is usually some catch. I got an offer for a $25K sign on bonus for my specialty (and lots in the $10-15K range). We have a shortage of experienced nurses in our specialty, so it MAY be legit. But I have a pretty awesome job...all things considered and my coworkers are the best. I would hate to leave over money and be miserable but the only draw to the new job having been money. If there were another reason to leave (or go) it'd be one thing. But over money alone? Nope. I'd feel rotten.

Great hospital to work for. Many believe they have the best benefits package of the Houston hospitals. A lot of research being done.

I know a nurse with two years of experience (experience not in the specialty she was hired for, no sign on bonus) who was started at $31/Hr plus diffs for weekend, evenings and nights.

I can't speak for the specific departments that are hiring but I know several people who have been at Methodist for years. They have been very happy with their experience.
