Nurses General Nursing

Well, my husband WAS okay with me taking a job that is closer to home, a nursing home that is a 15 minute walk from my house... a nice place that I really think I'm going to enjoy working...

But now he's starting to get on me about their insurance plan. It has a deductible, albeit a relatively small one, whereas my current/former employer's Aetna had no deductible. PCP visits are going to be 30 bucks now, as opposed to 10.. yadda yadda yadda.

This plan is even going to cost more out of each paycheck.. but it's all WORTH IT!!!!! Like I said in a previous thread, that job was making me suicidal at times.

But, you know.... keep a job that makes you absolutely miserable so we can save a few bucks at the doc's office!

Specializes in acute care med/surg, LTC, orthopedics.
My husband really should consider himself lucky.

Oh, and someone asked.. he works as a cook in a national restaurant chain. I've carried the burden of insuring us.. well, every since the FIRST time we ever had insurance, 14 years ago!!!!! He has NEVER had a job with insurance. I told him, if he doesn't like it, he needs to go out and get a decent job with benefits for once.

Beggars can't be choosers.

If you aren't suicidal that has GOT to save him some time and aggravation. Tell you're leaving the life insurance to your best friend if he doesn't **** off.

Specializes in ED, ICU, PSYCH, PP, CEN.

shame on him for not seeing the bigger picture

There you go NurseCard! He is welcome to change the situation at any time by seeking a job with better benefits. You have certainly borne the brunt of keeping health insurance. HE IS A LUCKY MAN! Don't let him forget it.;)

Specializes in pediatrics, public health.
And...if you are relatively healthy, you may not need to use your insurance benefits much.

I would caution against this type of thinking. Even the healthiest person on the planet is only one car accident or once unexpected diagnosis away from suddenly needing that health insurance they were so sure they wouldn't need. And by the time you need it, it's too late!

I do agree though that the OP's hubby is being way too picky -- as long as you have insurance to cover those unexpected diagnoses/accidents, the difference between a $10 copay and a $30 copay is not all that important. It's the difference between $30 and infinity that matters.

I agree with the general theme of the previous posts ... but want to add:

Congratulations on getting a job you think you will like! That's a thing worth celebrating.

Specializes in CCU, SICU, CVSICU, Precepting & Teaching.
i find it shocking, the places where people work, that do not provide health insurance to their employees. that is upsetting.

in my current/former job, i've cared for children whose parents were teachers in the public school system... and these kids were on medicaid. doesn't make sense to me.

my husband really should consider himself lucky.

good for you! if he's never had a job with benefits, he has no reason to complain about your benefits -- especially since you're apparently generously covering him at some expense to yourself. you could just cover yourself and let him find his own benefits!

You may want to point out ot him there was no gurantee the benefits at your former employer wouldn't increase at some point. I've had more than one job where the benefits changed drastically for the worse over the few years I was there.

Specializes in Med-Surg/Peds/O.R./Legal/cardiology.

It is so easy for husbands to tell you what to do. They are not the ones doing it and most don't have a clue what nursing is like! Just take care of your OWN butt as far as your work goes, as well as the benefits. He should be grateful that you have always provided the insurance coverage! :icon_roll
