pt complaint/called to office

So I'm a nervous wreck. I had a patient complaint about me that I escalated to management. Now I've been told not to work, but come to a meeting today. I've got a letters of resignation written for 'effective immediately' and 2 weeks notice, just to be prepared. Ugh! I think even if not asked for I'm turning one in, this place is way too stressful! Asking for thoughts for strength and to comport myself appropriately. Thanks!

Ditto that.

i had a complaint 3 weeks ago, from the boyfriend of a patient with hyperemesis. I was trying to get an IV line in to give flluids and antiemetics, and she was moving around arguing with him. He got mad that I asked her to keep still, and could not understand that she needed the IV meds to stop the nausea, kept demanding that I DO SOMETHING.

In the end he took my name and reported me for siting an IV line INSTEAD of helping her.

I give up : )

 Wait, you did not know he was a doctor, eh??? Sneaky...:coollook:

Keep in mind that if you need unemployment insurance, it will not be available if you submit a written notice of resignation. Good luck to you, and I hope that the best possible outcome arises out of this situation.

Looks like you can not quit or be fired to get unemployment .

Denial of Benefits

Any individual who quits a job, is fired from a job, refuses a referral to a job, refuses a job, refuses to enter Approved Commission Training, or fails to complete Approved Commission Training may be denied unemployment benefits.

Benefits are denied to any claimant who fails to meet the weekly eligibility conditions. This denial may be time certain (applied only to the week or weeks in which the condition/restriction existed) or indefinite (applied to each week until the condition/restriction is removed).

I hope they were educated after filing this complaint. Probably not, but I can hope right?

:uhoh3: What idiots in management even felt the need to bring this to your attention, if it was me I'd have filed it in the round file....(trash) Oh I'm sorry I seem to have misplaced that, could you send me another copy? If something smells wrong, ie they threaten right away board action, "say we will reschedule this meeting when I can have my lawer present (or union rep) or both. If they want you to sign some thing you don't agree with, write your statement on the same paper and say why you disagree, then sign under your statement.

Not to be paranoid but I was ambushed once. Don't want to see anyone go thru what I went thru.:twocents:

That can vary by state.. my cousin was fired from a hospital and was able to collect unemployment. When I was in school years ago, I got fired from my retail job, and was able to collect.

I've learned that for some people, the only "care" they understand is getting off on watching you run in circles, adjusting window blinds/fetching water/finding the perfect position for the head of the bed/calling doctors frantically to come in and see the pt/getting ice/getting hot towels........

But stopping the bleeding has not value. Pushing dextrose when the patient is hypoglycemic is just something you want to do for fun or to avoid all the things mentioned above.

With these people, it's the "hand holding" etc. that helps, not fixing the problem. I don't get along with this type, but they are a large part of the M/S population. So.........I deal with it, laugh of the criticism and continue to wait to find a better niche for myself.

With regard to being fired, I think that there are certain circumstances that will not allow you to recieve unemployment benefits. They generally list those, you can collect if none of those circumstances apply and I believe that you may have to wait awhile for it. I was fired once, but that was 30 years ago and I had to wait 13 weeks to receive benefits but I did get them.

Usually the rule of thumb is that if you are fired for breaking company policy, stealing, failing a drug test, SERIOUS things like that, I can tell you with virtual certainty that you will not get unemployment benefits.

But if you were terminated because "your work wasn't up to par" or "someone complained" or if "this isn't working out"...that is when you can get fired and collect.

Texas, employment at will. Thanks though. Already with 2 other jobs PRN, so more work at other places.

They can fire you, but legally, if you file for unemployment they have to respond. I lived/worked in TX for 17 years, and heard my administrators and DONs in nursing homes have to go to hearings periodically- labor laws are the same for hospitals -- :) ..... unemployment benefits do exist. I know that nobody wants to be fired, but it's better to have the unemployment benefits than lose your home or have to feed your kids cat chow.

See what they have to say. Sometimes it's just a formality. Can you think of anything that may have brought this on? (don't have to share, just good to be prepared at the meeting :)).

Do not resign! Patient complaints happen...and nurses are becoming increasingly vulnerable. We are the ultimate scapegoats for our countries eroding healh care system. Best of luck to you.

Illinois also employment at will, but that nothing to do with unemployment compensation.

You resign (with few exceptions) & you're ineligible. But as long as you have other employment, that's irrelevent
