Today I applied for a job and had to take a pre-hire exam at a LTC facility. It consisted of matching, MC, writing a nurses note and dosage problems. Thankfully I passed and have an interview scheduled for next week.

Monday I have to take another pre-hire exam at a hospital and I have been studying really hard for it. I do have one question that stumped me today and I don't want to get it wrong just in case I see it again. Here it goes:

What is the max. cc's that can be given IM and sub q . On my exam today I put 0.5-1cc for IM and 2cc for sub q. I'm not sure if I'm correct and wanted to double check with you all. I did a google search and checked the CDC but didn't not find clear answers. Thanks in advance for your help. :)

i always though more could go i and less for sc. Not sure of exact amounts. Id have to dig out a nursing book.

You've flipped the answer - just think about it. Subq is a smaller space - no more than a cc. IM is a larger space. Most of the time, 3cc's IM is the acceptable amt. I have seen 5 cc's IM as a max.

Where are your nursing books?

My medical surgical nursing books are buried, I'm currently taking psych.... I need to definitely get them out before my exam on Monday. :rolleyes:

You switched the answer for sure. I would have answered 1ml (cc's not used where I studied) for subcutaneous and 3ml max for Im injection. These probably vary a bit depending on policy.

I would give a max of 3mL for an IM. I recall reading this in a text before. The muscle tissue would be able to tolerate a larger amount of solution vs the smaller subcu tissue.

I was taught in a deltoid muscle, 1 to 2cc depending on the size of the muscle, (old lady 1cc, body builder 2cc), in the glute, no more than 3 cc. For a infant or toddler, 1cc in the thigh. Sub q, no more than 1cc.

Didn't they teach this in your LPN program? Not in the RN program you're in now? That's scary.
