Well I'm not sure if I can help you but I can at least tell you that we need more nurses out there so if you ever change your mind about becoming a nurse, let us know! in the meantime, good luck with chemistry,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,yuck, my worst subject!

Maybe you could arrange a shadow experience with a nurse. That way you could get a look at what nursing is really like, to see if you like it or not. Does any particular area of nursing interest you?

One of the best things about nursing is that there are so many different things you can do. You can work in a hospital in many different areas, clinics, research, teaching, advance practice, etc. It's great for a person like me, since I like to do many different things, and am always thinking about something new to do.

A nurse I used to work with in intensive care also had a chem degree, and a few years ago she went to work in research for a pharmaceutical company.

Depends on what you really like to do. If you have already taken that much chemistry, why not put that knowledge to work in forensic science? I sounds like you are heading for a different area than nursing. The questions would be: 1. Do you enjoy working with people? 2. List reasons why you would like to go into each area. 3. Look at pros and cons. Of course, we always need more nurses. However, if you are considering nursing because you think you will be earning plenty of money, turn and run into another direction, and fast. Nurses make about the same income as teachers, and work 12 months, instead of 9. They work weekends, nights and holidays. Nursing is a very physical job. Others would not be as hard on your body.

1) you would have very LITTLE opportunity to use specialized chemistry skills and information in nursing.

2) what do your science peers do when they have finished their chemistry training and education? the drug industry? oil/plastics? what kinds of jobs do they get? look into those areas for a more likely match for you than nursing.

3) many universities (and most community colleges) offer free career testing and counseling. this might be a more useful avenue for you to explore than simply looking at one career possibility after another.

Thanks for getting back to me everyone and thanks Jay Jay for moving it to the right forum. LOL, I didn't even realize I was in the Humor Forum. The reason I posted here is because I always wanted to be a nurse, but then realized that Chemistry suited me much more. I just thought that maybe some of you were in my position when you were in college. Maybe not. However, thanks again for your thoughts.

To answer some of the things you all posted, I have thought about going into the Pharmaceutical field. Also, I am a really big people-person.... I love working/helping people; hence the reason for always wanting to be a nurse.

My best friend's mom has a chem degree and she is a nurse. She's an RN but I think she does the teaching part. She loves being a nurse, and she says that because she has chem and nursing, she's doing exactly what she wants.

Tough choice........you've gotta go with what is in your heart, but how to find out what that is? Hmmmmmm. I don't know. Me? Now, I'd hate to shoo away any potential nurse in a time of shortage, but if you think you'd like forensics, heck, I say go for it! I've thought a lot lately how that would be such a cool field to be in, I think I'd really like it, but alas, I don't have the education (and lack motivation to return to school at this point in my life).
