I know that everyone has one but I would really like to hear your input on this. Tuesday, i was written up for failing to go to a class that I was supposed to. When I was asked why, I explained that i was involved with the care of a 16 month old in the ER. I figured that the write up would get thrown out after that but NOOOOOoooooo..........it was kept and it was added that I did not notify the supervisor (I remembered hours after I got home from work) and that I blatantly had no regard for hospital policy. I was shocked, horrified and outraged that there was more precidence(sp) placed on a damn class than on patient care. What do you think?

I think it's a bunch of whoey! It is evident, that someone there at your hospital is on a power trip! It doesn't really matter, but what was the class on?? And was this person who wrote you up your NM???

I think it is a bunch of hooey too! Agree...someone is definitely on a power trip.

On your write up should be a place where you can add your comments. That is just what I would do I would write on there that you are shocked and horrified that this class was considered more important than patient care. That kind of a comment add on should give them pause in leaving it stand.

I recently missed a course the hospital paid for and couldn't get a refund on so I could come in and work an extra when we recieved some emergent cabgs late in the day. The next morning my manager sought me out to say thankyou for bieng willing to pinch hit in a crunch. I apologized for being too tired to attend the class later that morning and she said, "Patient care comes first!". Whoever wrote you up needs to get a clue.

I agree the patients should come first...what about going to your manager and explaining the situation? My manager is great she has worked the floor and knows what its like to be busy and not able to get to something.....aslo try your staff developer or Nursing Ed within your hospital by law if you are unable to attend a mandatory meeting or class they have to provide written material for you and you have something like 1 week to turn it in. (I guess that it does depend on your state.) Hope this helps!

I agree w/ everyone here ~ patient care comes first!

I once missed a mandatory class because I had a pt who was not doing well, and I simply could not leave.

I told them the reason why I missed the class, and they completely understood.

Geez ~ we are professionals, not children.

Pooohey to your manager for writing you up!! :(

I too would be outraged. Especially at the comment that you have a blatant disregard for policy.

I would write up a little letter and ask that it be placed with this "write up". I assume that this gets put into your personnel file. I would simply state the facts and also verbalize the importance of continuous care and Standards of Nursing Practice. (I'm a first semester student, can't ya tell?)

Thank you all soooooooo much for your support on this issue. I have been debating on whether or not I should write a rebuttal letter. And it was not like it was the last available class, there were and still are others as compliance deadline is until the end of the month. The overwhelming response I have recieved has helped me to make up my mind. To answer Brownie.....yes the person that wrote me up was my NM. And yes, i explained to him that I was involved in patient care but it made little difference to him as he wrote me up anyway. When did we quit acting like professionals and start acting like children and why is it that some NM are out to slit the throat on some of their best nurses? Ahhh well, so many questions, not enough time to ask and way to little time to obtain the answers......Incidentally, when I write this letter, besides giving a copy to the NM....should I also send a copy to the DON and his assistant??? Or just leave it at sending him a copy?

I can't believe that you actually got written up for something as stupid as this.

Please don't take this the wrong way, you should not have been written up for this, but you perhaps you shouldn't have just blown it off. Perhaps you should have told someone that you wouldn't be able to make it. I think perhaps that's their point, you just blew them off and made no effort. Those not in the real world put a lot of importance on these kinds of things. Perhaps in your letter you can apologize for your part, but object to the write up?

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh !!! That really bites, Untamed. I have to agree with all the above. And yes, Tweety might have a point, too, as long as it wasn't an emergency.

A quick call with a brief and nonapologetic explanation of where you were and why you would not be attending should have sufficed. One should never be expected to apologize for putting the care of the patients first.

Agreed, do not apoligize for not going and putting patient care first, but apologize for not telling someone she wasn't going, was my point.
