I posted this on Concerns by mistake. I will also post this on Student Nursing!!

I just finished my second day of clinicals. I was assigned to the NB Nursury! I had a baby girl 5lbs. 4ozs. Just a little princess. She kept gagging though, and It scared me a little.

I was charting in the computer, she was about 10 feet away and I heard her. Got the bulb suction going, turned her on her right side and cleared the airway. The REAL nurse took me seriously, and checked on the baby with me.

I got to take 3 different babies to their Moms and got to listen to apical pulse and bowel sounds. The REAL nurse and I listened to breath sounds after she gagged. They were clear.

I also got to witness a circumcision!! AWESOME!!!

So far, I love OB!!!

OB is definitely awesome, I would never work anywhere else:)

Circumcision grosses me out though;) I wouldn't say participating in that part is awesome:chuckle

Well, no. I guess I got a little carried away! I thought it was neat to see for the first time, but I WON't watch it again. YUCK!!! I guess I'm just on a natural high for the six hrs. that just flew!!! I get to work in there again next week!! :D :D :D

Glad you're enjoying it!

This is why I like working with new nurses---their enthusiasm is contagious. Sounds like you will be a great nurse, you are already watching out for your patient!

I second this statement! :)

kwagner.........your first post brought a smile to my face and heart. It's great to think back on the days when I was so excited about clinicals as a student, then fastforward 17 years later and desire to have that freshness back again. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm with us. Best of everything to you in your journey towards becoming a very fine nurse! :kiss

How exciting!

I can't wait to do that in my 2nd year! I'm so thrilled for you!

I always love my clinicals............ I hate the classroom stuff, even though I know it's necessary. Clinicals and volunteer work help me to remember why I want to become a nurse!

Your enthusiasm is inspiring!

:kiss

The REAL nurse took me seriously, and checked on the baby with me.

Whats with this?

Why is it you dont think you are a nurse?

Does it not say student "Nurse" on your name tag?

Sounds great! I can't wait.....Being a student nurse is really exciting isn't it? :D I am stressed and spread pretty thin but would not trade it for anything!!!:chuckle

What I meant was, the RN took me, a lowly SN, seriously.

It is nice to know that she RESPECTED me!! :D

yes OB IS AWESOME....

that is why I work there and have since graduating in 1997.

best wishes to you.......

and yes, please quit referring to the primary nurse as the "REAL NURSE" .....

we are a team, and that includes students.

good luck.

Karen,

Sounds like you had a great day!!! Although I've had 3 Sons - I still tear up when watching the show "Birth Day" on TV. It's just an amazing thing to see a newborn come into the World and take it's first breath. I can't wait to get into school, start clinicals and experience the birthing process from the other side (as a student nurse and not the one delivering the baby). All of mine were 10 pounds each - I was in too much pain to look in the mirror at what was going on down there, know what I mean? So I've never seen a birth in person and can't wait.

My husband works in a Neo-Natal Unit - I got a chance to visit there once and although I was expecting to see tiny babies, I wasn't prepared for what I saw - it's very different when you see them in person. They literally looked like "little birds" - I was amazed that such tiny little ones had not only survived their births - but had tubes, iv's, etc. all over their itty bitty bodies and were fighting to live. I was always proud of what my husband did for a living, but after I saw the tiny little lives he had in his large hands each night - I had even greater admiration for him and all the people that help those babies keep fighting to live. Best of luck to you. SusanNC
