Ok, one more spin-off thread! On the stupid hospital tricks thread, we've discussed using trackers to monitor nursing activities throughout the shift. I find this so demeaning, and don't think micromanaging nurses is wise. It reminds me of the Trackers inserted in the contestants before the Hunger Games started. Now that I think of it, there are parallels between nursing and the Hunger Games, such as:

  • Limited resources
  • 24/7 work, often without breaks
  • constant analysis and observation by outsiders that have never walked in our shoes
  • dirty work
  • lots of death
  • gross stuff
  • both real, true, friends and mortal enemies made in the trenches
  • no one outside really "gets it"
  • no relief for injury,exhaustion, illness

So, if you designed the Nursing Hunger Games, what events and games would there be?

I'm picturing start of shift.

Stage is set, nurses in their places, sound goes off!

BAM everyone run towards the cornucopia for the needed supplies, but wait there's scraping and fighting for the best supplies, how about that pack of large bore IV's and 2L NS bags, those alcohol swabs and flushes, peri bottles and yankauer suction, gauze, and that really nice smelling lotion, extra Shileys and a pleurevac. It's madness!

but wait there is that one nurse that decides the cornucopia is too hectic and takes off into the abyss to begin shift with no supplies but with intent to come back later....

To Madras - not an imaginary game. CNAs do it for real at the start of their shifts in the LTC places I've been. Within a half-hour, the linen cart has been cannibalized (sp?) down to its bare shelves. Likewise for personal care items in the supply room.

Well, while doing noc for a crazy-busy med-surg unit, I half-seriously considered inserting my own foley and using a leg bag so I wouldn't have to stop......if that's not survival instinct, I don't know what is, LOL!

Lol, I have "been there!" We once considered a bladder scanning competition at the end of a long shift to see who had the most full bladder. Reminiscent of our "guess the blood etoh game."

I always thought that would be a crazy halloween costume at work. Have sequentials on your legs, dragging an iv pole with fuids and tpn, a foley bag clipped to your side. Hey and maybe a cape.......Super Nurse! (We better not give the head honchos any ideas. ;) )

LOVE this thread!! I imagine it being a nightshift full moon midnight strikes and the quiet breaks with a code blue alarm and all the staff rushes to the room and is running the code when the patient next door awakened but all the commotion runs naked down the hall seizes an IV pole and swings it at anyone who comes close. Suddenly state is there with their laptops and another patient falls and the ghosts that live in the unit all come out and chase everyone around. And then there is no coffee, no bathrooms, and no foleys left. Last nurse still standing wins, and if there is a tie then we bladder scan them and whoever has the most in their bladder wins.

Lol! It was like that on my old Med/Surg unit. The first to arrive got the good computers, flushes, pill splitters, could argue her assignment, etc. The nurse who won the day's game was the one who left on time in her own scrubs (no "accidents"), with her stash safely hidden and guarded by her noc buddy. She also had a lunch break and peed at least three times!
