I think outside of Medicine, Law, and Wall Street, few people working for someone else have that kind of earning potential. If you have an idea, you could be a nurse entrepreneur. I am sure Amelie Hollier and Margaret Fitzgerald earn the kind of money you aspire to. In my observation, those that earn the most money usually own their own businesses and are absolutely expert and passionate about what they do. Almost universally, they have also been risk takers and "go getters." They are driven to succeed for success itself, not just financial gain.

Start out by discovering what it is that you love, and get better at it than anyone else in your market area. I read once that if a person spends 1 hour a day in serious study of a subject, every day, they would be an expert in 5 years. Once you are there, you will see the opportunities.

Good luck.

You look at the time spent away from family and cringe.

It's do-able...

When I was @ home busting my @rse for so much less I

didn't see my wife then either. 12-hr shifts are hard that way.

Truth is that the extra $$$'s allow for me to fly home once

a month for a conjugal visit. :D I could fly home more often if

I desired but it defeats the point of traveling in the first place.

It's usually for a week at a time so I didn't even factor that week

off as "vacation" but really it is...

$15,000/month. 9 months that's $135,000.

Why do so many of you refuse to believe that you need advanced

degrees in order to make 6 figures? You don't.

And I could do this year-round. Oh, and did I mention that the majority

of income is paid as a tax-exempt stipend? No institution politics...

The pros far outweigh the cons.

Look at the numbers. Come on over to the dark-side...

your destiny, consume you it will..." -Yoda

My first thought reading the OP was that I would adopt a baby girl if it was that important, lol.

Some great advice. Thanks.

"The minute you buy something it's obsolete."

It's not about that, really. My kids (& lovely wife) are already spoiled as it is. Not that I feel compelled to be defensive or explain myself, but I have two sisters with special needs and I would like to have a more significant role in their care & not leave everything up to the state. This requires money. Stuff like that. My only toy growing up was a single Lincoln Log - I had to imagine having more than one in order to construct rudimentary buildings in my head. My family can do without "stuff".

I am secretly planning on managing/coaching a basketball team with a starting lineup of my sons. Two more to go before I bend to my wife's will.

"I felt a great disturbance in the Force." I really don't know if I could do it, but it sounds appealing as hell. I understand that the success of my marriage may be partly dependent on my upside-down, busy schedule and the "hello & good-bye" nature of our interaction. But I'm joking & would very much like to have a more normal life & see the boys as often as possible. Sounds great, though. Maybe next time.

Great post, thanks. I don't know when it happened, but it did. Both academically & professionally. Feels pretty f'n good, too. Like you said, I'm fairly certain I found my niche, now it's a matter of acquiring expertise & letting the rest fall into place. Excellent advice.

Again, people, thanks for the insight.

Travel nursing, that is. That monthly conjugal visit isn't too far off the mark, either. I have a busy schedule, okay? Don't judge me.

Daaaaang, brother. Find some cheap hookers, willing to sell some meth for you on the side?:D

Seriously, you might get close if you found a niche service in your area, and getting your "family conunselling", "profession-related counsellor" cert/licensure, or some gobbledegook assistence service you could bill for, off-hours. Maybe write some self-help pamphlets and e-publish, or work towards a professional cunsultancy business.

As Emergency Nurse said, if you want perks and money, travel nursing is a good option. I have a friend doing the same, making 55 an hour, meals and all expenses paid. She is on the lower end of the scale where I live. It isn't feasible for everyone, but for people able to travel, the benefits are great. I plan to do the same eventually.

CRNA's might make close to that, but I'm sure your talking tuition around $100,000+, intense study, intense competition and being willing to relocate. Hospitals are increasing using more CRNA's then anesthesiologists to save money so you also have the professional conflict between CRNA's & MD's over turf and jobs. It would not be my cup of tea. I'm not that great at IV's and then to have to intubate and be responsible if something goes wrong over the sedation or vocal cord damage. Definitely too high-wire for my stress level.

I prefer to use strictly my mind, lol, rather than technical things like intubation. They changed ACLS now so you don't need to have to demonstrate intubation anymore and even though it was on dummies and we never do it any real life I was relieved. I've seen a couple patients with swallowing issues one thought to be permanent but luckily I heard recovered, Thank God!
