Since so many new RN grads are having difficulty or long waits finding RN positions...should an LPN

even bother to go on for the RN ?

I definitely would. This is a temporary situation and eventually there will be a shortage that is unlike any other before.

Go for it.

yeah u should, buy the time to get ur RN, this hiring freeze SHOULD be over..

Absolutely especially since you are working as a LPN. Your list of professional contacts will be helpful when it comes time to apply for a job. I am still at the job I had when I was a LPN but making way more money. :D

I am one of the New Grads that was able to find a job, and I believe my experience as an LVN greatly helped me. I had a job within a couple months of graduation, but I know many people who don't. Part of it's location, part economy and the other random factors. But I wouldn't be discouraged by a temporary situation.

okay so people keep saying this hiring freeze is temporary and is going to be over soon. but how do you know that? when do you anticipate this to be over ?

I say go 4 your rn. it will be worth it in the long run. besides employers would hire a new grad rn with experience as a nurse over a new grad with zero experience being a nurse

i've been a nurse long enough to have suffered several shortages. it is inevitable. everyone is postponing their retirement--that's a given.

i do not have a crystal ball--all i can say is just hang in there...the ball is in the employers' court at this time---it will be the employees' again.

it is the way of the nursing world.

they know that because they have seen the cycle repeat itself over and over again.

the last time i remember things (in general) this bad was 1990 (the last time i graduated college). that situation started to improve around 1992. so based on past events, i expect this slowdown in hiring to be over in 2011. there's your prediction and it isn't worth the paper it isn't printed on.

the thing is, the economic slowdown hits everyone. make your decisions based on what you want to do with your life. look at it this way - by the time things get better, you will be well prepared.
