We just added a Glossary option to the site to help with all the Nursing lingo and tech lingo used online. Hopefully you will find this helpful.

We have already added several terms/abbreviations that are commonly used on this BB and nursing terms, but we need your help to populate the list to make it more useful.

BKA- below the knee amputation

A&O- alert and oriented

BRP- bathroom privileges

UAL- up ad lib

MI- myocardial infarction

MICU- medical intensive care unit

SICU- surgical intensive care unit

TX- treatment

CRNA- certified registered nurse anesthetist

CDI- clean, dry and intact

ABX- antibiotics

DM- diabetes mellitus

CA- cancer

ABG- arterial blood gas

IVF- intravenous fluids

IVP- intravenous pyelogram

How about AAA=abdominal aortic aneurysm or apply affected area

or American automobile Assoc. (lol)

DNR: Do Not Resuscitate

OD:Rt. eye

OS: Lt. eye

OU Both eyes

CABG: Coronary Artery Bypass Graft

RCA: Right coronary artery

LAD: Left anterior descending

Cx: Circumflex artery

EPS: electrophysiology study (of the heart...)

MI: myocardial infarction

NTG: nitryglycerin

VT: Ventricular Tachycardia

ac:before meals

hs: hour of sleep

and the list goes on...

How about:

HCA- Health care assistant

DNA- did not attend

CSW- clincal support worker

This is going to sound so dumb but i really don't know what BCLS, SCLS, PALS, TNCCP, CEN, ED, FNATC, PHTLS, etc mean. I'm going into school and want to know now - thanks

PALS = Paediatric Advanced Life Support

ED= Emergency Department

The one tha threw mw for a while was MAR = Medication Adminisrtation Record

What does "Author" mean in yellow band heading the postings screen?

This is going to sound so dumb but i really don't know what BCLS, SCLS, PALS, TNCCP, CEN, ED, FNATC, PHTLS, etc mean. I'm going into school and want to know now - thanks

BCLS =Basic Cardiac Life Support

SCLS =I think you mean ACLS...Advanced Cardiac Life Support

PALS =Pediatric Advanced Life Support

TNCCP= Could you mean TNCC (Trauma Nurse Core

Curriculum.... a trauma resuscitation course)

CEN =Certified Emergency Nurse

ED =Emergency Department

FNATC =>>>>Sorry, I have no idea

PHTLS =PreHospital Trauma Life Support

And more: ENPC=Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course

(similar to PALS)

ATLS=Advanced Trauma Life Support

Forget it....I just answered my own question. DUH!

I am a Canadian Nursing Student and I see DON a lot. What does that stand for? We may have an equivalent but I probably just don't recognize the acronym yet. :confused:
