A few weeks ago, ohiobobcat posted a topic about giving his first epi-pen and I was just wondering: what are some other firsts for the nurses out here? What have you never done before? (in terms of nursing practice. I don't want to hear that you've never skinny-dipped. That's a topic for another day)

Or, what's something you recently were exposed to for the first time in your career? I'm curious to know which experiences some of us have yet to face at work.

I've recently made a few referrals to CPS, dealt with suicidal ideation, dealt with cutting, eating disorders, sexual/physical and emotional abuse, rape, teen pregnancy, teen STDs, clarifying safe sex, screened for pot, used a Breathalyzer, held a despondent kid in my arms... all for students under 18.

Never have I done CPR on someone under the age of 18.

I've gone skinny dipping.

I feel like this is some bad mo-jo.

Never ever would I say what I haven't done for fear that it will happen tomorrow! Eeek!

I've been out of nursing school for 6 years and about 2 weeks ago, had to start my first IV catheter. On a 92-year-old dehydrated woman with veins that looked about as wide as sewing thread. She had a critical high potassium level and the on-call PA at the local hospital called right in the middle of my med pass with an order for a STAT IV bolus of 500mL NS. I had to call the DON to find out where our IV stand and had to cobble together a set as all of our kits were outdated. I was so nervous! But I got it on the first poke--didn't have to mine around either! Yay! She got her fluids but ended up in the hospital the next day as she couldnt tolerate the PO antibiotics for the massive UTI she had.

I fear the list of what I "have never" is probably about 7 1/2 miles long! I did, however, give an enema for the first time this week. How's that for exciting?! :lol2:

I stuck to my current job. There's lots I haven't done in 20 years.

Mostly trauma related.

Goodness me, I think my preceptor had me doing enemas the first week of hire! Probably so she wouldn't have to lol. How was your experience?! Was it a real crapshoot? (I crack myself up)

You guys crap me up...I mean crack me up! :D I guess this was just one of those "opportunities" that never presented itself before this past week. I am happy to report that the enema was successful :up: Now that's something I can check off of my nursing bucket list :roflmao:

Holy cow! Good for you, you must have a knack. I started my first IV on a really old lady with paper thin skin. She was blind and couldn't see the look of terror on my face.

I started mine on a 9 year old. Almost 40 years ago and I still think about it from time to time.
