Nurses General Nursing

Yesterday was a busy day and I had two patients who took a lot of my time and I needed a lot of orders for both of them. A young doctor I didn't know well was covering for one of the docs, and after he listened to me describe each problem, ask for orders, and then put in the orders, he walked away down the hall and I called out "thank you!" because he had been very helpful to me. He turned around in the middle of the hall and called back (in front of a lot of other nurses) "No, thank YOU because I know that you nurses are the ones WHO DO ALL OF THE WORK. I come in for 5 minutes a day, but you are here all day. So thank YOU!"

We all applauded.

He's my new favorite doctor :)

I feel blessed for several of the great docs I get to work with here, but the 3 pulmonologists that we have are a nurse's dream. Lots of praise, lots of respect and lots of patience. It definitely helps offset much of the negatives!

Had a doc doing lectures in ACLS tell the class (I was doing a recert) that if I called him to a room, he knew he'd better get there fast because he knew I wouldn't call him for anything not important.

Nice to get that pat on the back once in a while.

A bit off topic, I don't work in the ER...but people seriously come in for constipation?

Look up the thread in Emergency nursing under specialties, "what was the most ridiculous thing a patient came to the ER for?. It'll blow your mind.......

Now THAT my friends.....is a real DOCTOR!

A rare breed to be sure.......I have been fortunate in my career to be surrounded by a rare cluster of this kind....and it was heaven.

I am jealous, we have one doc and one NP who think they are so much better than us nurses that they don't even say please or thank you. The one told me, well it's your job, just do it. Okay, who peed in your cheerios?

A bit off topic, I don't work in the ER...but people seriously come in for constipation? I did have a friend tell me she went to the ER because a mosquito bit her arm, and she was worried she might have west nile. I'll also add she had no symptoms of anything except itching at the bite site. lol

Unfortunately yes, people come in for way worse actually. Sometimes they call 911 just for a ride to the hospital and then expect us to give them a cab voucher to get the rest of the way to their destination LOL. Definately check out that thread the previous poster mentioned in emergency nursing, its hilarious!

We have some good and some bad at my facility. It's great when they acknowledge your work and say "Thank you." Although our residents are fairly accessible and respond to pages. I truthfully text page with a lot of requests for orders and I will put in commonsensical orders or activate standing orders for them. I also will write down verbal orders and put them in. I like that our team trusts us to do that and often are thankful for it.

However, we have a couple of mid-levels that can get a tad bipolar on us and snap quickly at nurses and other staff. I roll my eyes and move on. Our hospice team is amazing to work with and I love the NP though!! Makes it all easier.

I work Oncology and chemo can really cause constipation. No matter how much we try to educate the patients before they start chemo of this possible side effect (it is addressed on several different occasions with written protocols on what to do if they go more than one day without a BM), there is always that one that hasn't had a BM in well over a week, hasn't tried the ducolax, sennakot, MoM or mirilax we recommend that calls us with severe abdominal pain, nausea at 4:00 on a Friday. Now we are worried about obstruction. Since we close at 5:00, their only option is to go to the ER to check it out. Sorry ER guys!!

Then there was one patient who kept going to the ER with constipation and seepage issues. He was a young guy, in his 20's and I doubt he had a PMD or even insurance as a lot of young guys his age don't. ER kept giving him enemas and sending him on his way. He ended up having stage 3 rectal cancer that was causing blockages. He dealt with this for months before someone looked beyond the constipation. :(

YES!!!

Honest to God, people come in at 0300 with "Non traumatic finger pain"!!!! No joke!

About the docs, it's just fantastic when you get one that's that cool. And just awful when you get one who gives verbal orders and then says stuff like "I never ordered that!"

I met an older doctor when I was a student in ICU who was AWESOME and I wish they were all like him. There was a lady who needed an emergency procedure done at the bedside so I was trying to stay out of the way, but also wanted to watch. There were plenty of nurses around, but he intentionally asked me to help him and I could tell he thoroughly enjoyed teaching me and the fact that I wanted to learn.

When he was finished, there were a lot of sharps and bloody objects on the table and I offered to dispose of them. He said, "NO! Don't you touch that. I'm the one who made that mess and there's no sense in 2 people taking a chance of being stuck, and if a doctor ever tells you to do that then you tell him NO!"

I really wouldn't have cared to do it because there was only so much I COULD do as a student, but I was surprised at his reaction. What's funny is I remember hearing my grandmother (who is dead now) say that doctor's name a lot. It was ironic.

There are a few medical residents at my facility who I love to death. They are so courteous when I call them and if they are there in person and have time they are excellent teachers. I have also dealt with doctors who get angry if you don't know right off the top of your head exact details about the patient. I do not care to describe that wound to you here. Why don't you go look at it yourself. Ugh.

Am I the only one raising one eyebrow at this thread...

It seems as though if a doctor praise someone for actually doing their job they are considered a good or better yet AWESOME doctor.

I mean if this thread was reversed a doctor wrote " A nurse just told me how amazing and how hard I work running from patient to patient over two wings, while she only has 8 patients. Why can't all nurses be like this?" I'm not sure that thread would be well received.

The thread reminds of the trophies in little league, everyone gets one for just being themselves. Is this what nursing has been reduced to?

You should know that it's hard in any profession to find a team that you work with "like clockwork". Any time I stumble across one, I am grateful and acknowledge it.

It sounds like you are feeling patronized by the doctor or are you a doctor and don't hear this about your practice? Why don't you see it as being appreciated by a co-worker? Where I work, our providers know and brag about being appreciated by the nurses, too, BTW.

The doctors that we are talking about are the ones who value TEAMWORK over power games. That's why they are awesome doctors. They are few and far between which is why they are especially appreciated by the nurses.
