Maybe that's a gender thing, dunno. It's logical to expect that if you expend the same or less energy at your worksite as you might at home, you should be equally as tired. Not true, at least not for me. I worked a double yesterday, and my second shift required very little work, mostly just chatting with patients and staff and an odd task or two. By 11 pm I was WIPED. The difference is, I believe, that when I'm at work I'M AT WORK. Doesn't matter what the duties are, I'm not relaxing, I'm still prepared for any matter of things, and my clothes and shoes sure as hell don't help.
When you work in a healthcare setting you've always got a second set of eyes/ears/etc. on what MIGHT happen, and that really does suck a lot of energy. I don't think it's easy to explain it to anyone who hasn't been in your shoes. If my husband gave me that line, I don't think I would say anything. Mostly because if I did, it would just escalate into an argument that I don't even have the energy for.
You know I came home tired cause we worked one aid short today and there are only 3 total people on the suite i work at a ltc and my husband had the gall to say "How can you be tired from just passing meds all day" what the f***. i mean, is that the perception of nursing now, oh you just give shots and meds all day long

ha, my boyfriends brother had the nerve to say that him being a waiter at olive garden is a lot harder and he has to work a lot harder than nurses do.
i was a server in a steakhouse as an undergraduate and your boyfriend's brother is right -- it is hard but a different kind of hard.
now, having said that, would you like us to beat him up too?!

What we do as nurses? We breathe life to patients. We don't just get tired, we die inside when as we care for others, we leave our children behind; when as we comfort the sick and dying, we get home to people who care less.
sounds right the other day i came home late and heard "Mom you are late!" from my 11 year old, "Babe did you bring anything home for supper" from my hubs, and "where have you been and what were you doing" from my 7 year oild. at least the dog was happy to see me
