Does anyone know whether Pernicious Anemia can be Hereditary?

Someone in my family has it, and I have just discovered I have a low Platelet count and have to go for more bloods on the 21st - the 1st available appointment!! (I was being checked out for Ovarian/cervical Cancer and all other bloods - Cea, etc were ok)I need to have Full blood count again. I know it could mean a variety of things really and I mustnt jump to conclusions - but I am a nurse and wouldnt you do the same??!!I was told when I rang for the results that if I started to bleed - to ring the doctor.

I have been feeling tired lately and doing about 45 hours a week, plus trying to study for the NCLEX - looking after 2 kids and Husband that isnt too well.

Sorry this is all over the place - just needed to get it off my chest.

Thanks;)

Thanks for that Smiling Blue Eyes - really appreciate it.

Looked on that site and it was very helpful - seems that I have almost all of the symptoms too plus have had 2 Smears come back abnormal.

So maybe i can stop thinking the worst for the timebeing!!!

This maybe way off track for you, but my blood reacts with the ..gosh can't remember the stuff in the bottom of the tube.....citrate? maybe..any how....my blood reacts with it and my platelets clump together and when the machine tries to count them it says I don't have enough. I went through some very scarey, nurse imagination days til i went to a hemotologist and she told me the first thing they do when someone comes in with a diagnosis of a low platelet count , she draws the blood in a empty tube and runs the cbc right away. When mine was done I was aok. My own doc at the time was not aware of this. I had to have cbc's drawn 4 times then..before he called me and scared me half to death and told me I didn't have enough platelets. So I am crossing my fingers that it will be a simple explanation for you also. Hugs across the ocean.

I was diagnosed with PA back in 1996. I've never had a pap smear come back abnormal. My main symptom was that I was tired all the time....extremely tired. I would wake up after 8 hours of sleep & be more tired then when I went to bed. There is no history of it in my family. I have had thyroid problems since I was a kid so the connection with PA is that they both are autoimmune diseases & it is not uncommon to have more than one autoimmune disease (I'm hoping these are the only two I have). I get a b12 shot every 3 to 4 weeks & everything is fine.

Hope everything works out for you.

I was diagnosed with PA in 1996, after losing weight, having weird dizzy spells, falling over etc. also have thyroid problems and bowel problems (all 3 being autoimmune diseases)

like Jennerizer it was being so,so tired all the time i could easily sleep for 14 hours!

My Doc told my 97% of PA suffers are 40+ year old women with blue/green eyes. which so far i found true! and strange!

I was 16 with green eyes, im ok now just suffer with cramps in my legs

I hope everything gets sorted, its horrible waiting.

Well I went for a HVS today, and while I was there I asked about my blood results - apparently my Platelet count was 104.

I am going for repeat bloods on Monday so will let you know when I have the results and what the Doc says!!

Sue

"Pernicious anemia occurs as a relatively common adult form of anemia that is associated with gastric atrophy and a loss of IF production and as a rare congenital autosomal recessive form in which IF production is lacking without gastric atrophy.

The disease was named pernicious anemia because it was fatal before treatment became available, first as liver therapy and, subsequently, as purified vitamin B-12. The term pernicious is no longer appropriate, but it is retained for historical reasons"
