Hi Everybody;

It's me again. Last week I posted "HELP I'M UNEMPLOYED" about the problems I was having getting a job here in Salt Lake City, Utah and asking for some input on my interviewing skills, what was I doing wrong at the interviews. I want to thank all of you wonderful people who gave me such great input. Well I used to live in Reno, Nevada and decided to check out the nursing positions there. I applied for a nursing position in L/D at one of the hospitals there and they called me and did a phone interview and have since offered me a job starting at $28/hr working 12 hour nights with a 10% night shift differential. They are willing to help me re-locate back to Reno and will also help me with housing. I talked to one of my nursing friends about this and she told me there are red flags all over this and to further investigate this. She thinks that they are so desperate for nurses that they will offer me this world and the next just to get me to work there and that this job offer looks too good to be true. HELP!!!!!!!!

I have a several friends who took positions where they were paid to relocate, and had administration bend over backwards to assist them in many different ways. Both are experienced LPNs who used to travel, and after several months at their new jobs, both are very happy.

I see no red flags here, but it couldn't hurt to talk to one of the nurses on staff at this hospital.

Congrats on the offer..:)!

Wow. Shake that monkey off your back and enjoy your new job. How very exciting for you. I wish you the best of luck.:D

I know several people who have been given relocation allowances..... maybe someone else can speak to the wages but sounds like a great oppurtunity to me!

When I graduated from nursing school I wanted to work in labor and delivery so bad because I felt that I could make a difference because of my language skills and my desire to help people. I've since done med/surg and postpartum and would love to do lagor and delivery but I've heard so many negative things about working in labor/delivery because it is such a high risk/high liiability area and I'm afraid to fail or even worse be responsible for a something horrible happening to the mother and her baby. I would love some feed back from you labor and delivery nurses out there. By the way I graduated in 1993 at the age of 46 and I'm now 56 yrs old...I think this job is the opportunity of a life time, but after talking to my nurse friend I'm starting to have doubts!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If they werre giving you all that and a sign on bonus for big bucks, then I would be suspicious, but this sounds good. The salary is great, the shift diff is certainly do-able, and I see nothing wrong w a relocation fee. From what I understand LV and Colorado are really hurting for nurses, so if they pay you...you will come, makes sens to me. See Kimmicoobug's thread though too!!

Good Luck

How do I access Kimmicobug's thread??

That seems like a normal pay in Ca and Nevada area from what I know. Goodluck

I've heard Nevada being a high growth state can't staff their hospitals. Doesn't sound too good to be true to me.

Good luck! Lots of hospitals pay to relocate.

Sorry for my ignorance, I have never really worked in the hospital setting in the past and I am just a student right now. I am wondering, if offers like this are made, what types of problems or "red flags" are you guys talking about? If an employer tells you they will pay for relocation and give you a certain rate of pay aren't they obligated to do so? I am wondering what types of things (lies) will employers tell you to get you to work for them and then renig on the deal?

I know at the clinic I used to work for, they were notorious for hiring people from the hospital or other places at the same rate of pay they were making (a lateral move) and then after a year cut their pay and tell the employee that it was a mistake they were making to much money. That way they knew the employee could not up and quit and go back to their old jobs without starting all over again as far as seniority, pay level, and benefits.

I am just wondering what other types of scams are out there.:(

To Pilotjim68: The "red flags" are that the offer is better than most nurses get in most regions of the country. That raises questions about why that particular hospital has to pay so much to attract new nurses. The thinking goes, "If they were a good place to work, they wouldn't be so desparate."

The only way to investigate the situation is to find out what the norms are for that particular community. In some regions of the country, hospitals are paying more than they are in other areas -- and even a good hospital to work at will need to keep up with the local competition.

Wisely, the original poster is looking for more information to help her evaluate the job offer.

Good luck to you all,
