Is this insane or what?

Nurses General Nursing

I have worked in the same unit for the last several years. The stress of the unit, the politics and the same old bull just really started to wear me out over the last year. When I started to feel that I was going to be physically ill going to work, I decided to find another job.

I did find another job within the organization I currently work for. I gave notice in NOVEMBER. Here rolls in January I am allowed to start my new job part-time. Problem is that my new job is full time, only I can't leave my old unit until 11 new hires are oriented. I still have to work in my old unit every 3rd 12 hour 3 day weekend until SUMMER. So it ends up that my old unit is keeping me for over 32 weeks!

It has been so bad to go to work at the old unit that I want to cry or puke anytime I think of how much longer I have to work there. This unit has done so many crappy things to me that I have really started to become bitter and attempt to vent at my peers. What I didn't realize was that there were brown noseing capabilities in the people I used to trust and admire. "We must all promote a positive enviroment for the new people". We only care about the "new" people not the people that have stuck it out.

I want to tell my old boss that I want OUT at a much more reasonable time frame than she has given me, but I am afraid of backlash and I still have to spend quite a bit of time on this unit in my new job.

SO Confused....

Uh, newsflash, but an employer can't hold you there "against your will"!

As long as you gave adequate notice (which is truly only a courtesy anyway), there's nothing they can do!

I'm guessing that you're staying because they asked and you didn't have the courage to tell them no, right? If that's the case, then you only have yourself to blame! Noone will take care of you, except you!

:nono:

It is all within the same facility. I have to stay in a position that is need based. My new job isn't need based.

sounds as if you are stuck unless you leave that organization altogether. good luck.

Oops, sorry...I missed the part about it being in the same organization!

In that case, you are stuck, unless you find another job elsewhere!

Yes, it is insane that you don't have the courage to stand up for yourself and go for what YOU want. You don't have to live your life on the schedules of other people or organizations unless YOU choose to do so.

(And don't bother to flame me. I'm not the one you need to stand up to.)

Remember:

I would take it up the chain of command - how far up can you reach??? Go in for an "informal" talk and let it all out - how you are feeling and why stress that if this goes on your psychological distress may put you in an undesirable position, whether that be becoming truly physically ill through to (heaven forfend!!) an error at work YOU cannot and should not have to continue in that situation.

Do not go in blaming anyone. Do not make it sound like a vent and if you can be unemotional about the situation.

Luck!!!

You get as much crap as you are willing to take! :D

Just in total agreement with you on this one sjoe. :)

moonshadeau.........Why are you choosing to stay with the same organization that doesn't respect your need to make changes in your work environment for your own sanity?

I would definitely go up the chain of command as they say! Go to your current Nurse manager, explain that this is not acceptable , there is, after all, a reason you are leaving your old unit.... I would even go so far as to tell her that if you are not allowed to leave this current job to move to the new one, that you will have to just give your resignation....(and, hey, what's to stop you from then re-applying for the "new" job)....seems a waste of time, effort and paperwork, but only you can do what you need to do to be happy. If your nurse mgr is unreceptive, go above her head, even consider talking to HR...make some waves! They can't just hold you hostage indefinitely!

If you are unable to do that, perhaps leaving this organization is the best thing. Good Luck!:)

Actually they can as long as she choose to stay with this employer.

It is unfortunate that these things oocure but ultimately the employer has the last say when it comes to moving around in an organization. They don't have to let you move if you are need more where you already are.

You can discuss this with them but they do not have to comply with your wishes or needs. You were hired for that position.

It is kind of like getting sick during a shift. You can't just let the supervisor know and leave. You have to waite to be released. That ususually means if there is no one to take your patients you are stuck.

Nothing can stop you from applying but they are not likely to rehire you under these circumstances. They do hold all the cards in this case.
