Help!!!

I woke up 3 days ago in severe pain in my lower back and down the back of my right leg. I can't stand without crutches and the pain makes me cry. I called my Dr. who prescribed Vicodin, Norflex , and a medrol dose pack. I was supposed to see him today but I can't get out of bed. Has anyone experienced this before, any suggestions would be appreciated.

You are a nurse. Call him. Let your fingers do the walking and get transportation and help to get there if necessary. Call ambulance, and or go to ER. But don't take this lying down. BUT FIRST CALL and TALK to your MD and MAKE IT CLEAR what is going on.

My praryers and good wishes are with you. You are at ver high risk being a nurse. I had a friend (LVN) who was doing a body lift with several other people. She had the feet (the least weight) In the course of this she fell. Felt fine. The next day could not get out of bed. Fx spine. permanately disabled.

Need I say more. Please, Please advocate for the most important person in your life. You.

First thing you need is an MRI. Second thing you need to do is not work until you have the MRI. If the MRI place tries to delay an appointment find another that will take you sooner. Call your doctor and get the script. He or she works for you. YOU pay this person's bills. Would you let a plumber who blew you off back into your home? Nope, you'd find another. From the way it sounds it sounds like you should probably make a trip to an ER.

Good luck. Hope they find out what is going on!

I have a bad L5 disc, so I know what you are going through. If you've been on steroids for 3-4 days and are no better, you need to let the doc know and if he won't help you then go to the ER, which is probably what he will tell you to do anyway. If you can stay in bed and pain is made tolerable by your medications, you can probably wait until Monday and then go to see him/her. If what youare taking now is NOT helping and he won't up your medication, head to the ER. There is no use lying there in pain when other medications can control it. I hope you feel better very soon, Wendy

oooo, Badbird, ((((hugs)))) and I hope you're better soon!

My husband just got through one of these bad spells...worst he ever had. It took 5 bedrest days on steroids, Vicodin, and muscle relaxers to feel any better, then it slowly resolved with gentle manipulative therapy by our DO. He has had MRI's and knows he has multi level disc disease and spinal stenosis from an old work injury.

Did you injure yourself at work and is it documented? Has this ever happened before? You probably know this but it's worth repeating... if you have difficulty with bowel or bladder, or can't control your pain, go to the ER...no point in suffering like this...they can admit you and you'll get worked up faster too. :)

(((HUGS)))) Hope it resolves quickly without residual problems!

Too many nurses injure their backs at work...:(

Badbird,

Hope you feel better soon...:p I agree with all of the others...get to the ED ASAP!!!!!! Keep us posted...we care about ya!!!!:kiss

sounds like sciatica. If the weather is rainy- your pain will be severe. Heat will provide temporary relief. However, do not leave heat on for longer than 15 min at a time. About half of the people who get this recover in 6 wks or so. Rest.

Good luck and hope you get well asap.

Start now and try to remember if anything was the trigger for this. Most back injuries are a result of multiple mini injuries rather than one single event, however.

If the heat doesn't help you might try ice on the back, but probably not on the leg. Good luck, by now I hope you are back to 100%.

well badbird, I sympathize with ya on this one. Backs can be a pai. I have 3 crushed discs the spinal guys want to operate on. Ive had for 8 years now. I get by with good exercising, and wearing magnets. Between both I have avoided the knife and still play golf very well 3 days a week. So hang in there and good luck to you

Thanks everyone for you well wishes, I did go to the ER and had a MRI which showed a herniated discL5-S1, I was admitted for four days and so far I have responded well to steroid therapy. Hopefully I won't need surgery. I have been home 1 day now and I only took 1 vicodin, rest with frequent repositioning helps. I wish I knew How I injured myself, I don't remember hurting myself at work, the Dr. says you can sneeze and throw you back out. Well so far so good, thanks for the advice.
