Help! Me and my family needs health insurance

by jrowmom

Ok, I would think that this would be a common thing but I am having a had time finding any info. I am trying to find a good nursing organization (I am an RN) that you can get health insurance through. My physician said that would be a better way to get insurance than private health insurance.
Nurse switch jobs and agencies so often I would think it would be common. I am not working at the moment (ins. ran out with previous agency) and don't have health ins for me and my son and husband (and he is self employed) at the moment. I know, shameful. But even if I get a job soon I still would like it not through my employer because we may move and I just want my insurance to be the same one I can keep no matter how much switch jobs/employers.
I have been wanting to join a professional nursing organization anyway (my nursing school said it was a responsibility of a nurse, part of being a professional, oops and I never have yet after 3 1/2 years). So does anyone have any ideas? I would really appreciate it.

It depends a lot on your state. In NYS a family plan will run well over $1000 a month IF you can even find one.

No, not shameful.

At the very least, see if you can get your son on some insurance. I don't know about your state, but my state has Hawk-I for kids that is low-cost insurance, but there are income limits that are not too difficult to meet. Do you have some sort of insurance like that in your state?

here is the nurse's service organization:
http://www.nso.com/personal-insurance/

i would try BCBS in your state though. they usually are somewhat reasonable unless you have a pre-existing and have good coverage.

Most states have some kind of low-cost insurance for children. Vermont's is Dr. Dynasaur. Income limits are usually higher than for adult coverage.

If you or your husband are members of any professional organizations, they usually offer some kind of group health insurance.

A few months ago, Consumer Reports had an article on "junk" health insurance plans that pay for very little. You may want to check that out before you buy a plan.

When I was working as a actiivty director in a LTC for 10 bucks an hr, the facility health insurance ran 250 bucks a month...that's a bit much when you only bring home about 1300 a month. I went to ehealthinsurance.com, and found a BCBS policy for about 100 a month with a 2000 deductible, 1 free well check visit, and basic coverage. I'm a young male with no current health problems, so it was not a problem for me....try that and see if there's anything better for you..
