Grrrr scheduling!

I work the next 3 nights (12-hr shifts), then off ONE, work 2 more nights, then off ONE, then work one more. Man, I dont know how I am going to make it. This sucks. Anyone else had to work schedules like this?

I have worked 2 full time jobs for the last 2+ years. 6, 12 hour shifts, 7 sometimes. I have 3 days off this month. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

OMG! When do you find time to enjoy yourself! I couldnt do what you are doing, my body wouldnt let me. I think alot of my problem is Im apparently not cut out for night shift. And I HATE my job, which doesnt help either. I still couldnt work like you do. DANG!

Hey,

Your in KY!!! We used to live there. The wife is from Elizabethtown. I was stationed at Ft Knox.

I only do it cuz I gotta. Wife is a full time student, House, car, 3 kids, 2 dogs, cat--you know, I HAVE TO FREAKING DO IT.

Every once in awhile I will get a schedule like that but ninty percent of the time its two on three off than one on two off. If your schedule becomes more than you can handle, often, then talk to your nurse manager and see if it can be resolved. Most nurse managers will work with you if you keep a positive professional tone.

We do a version of self schedling we fill out what we want and the gal whos does the official schedule makes what she can work .... it works well for us and I hardly ever have that annoying one on one off unless I do it to myself. I work 12h noc's and when the day shift did our schedule it was baaaaddd they don't get that that first day off is almost like not having a day off at all.

Except that right now since I don't have many responsibilities/dependents in life ... I have let management know that my schedule is quite flexible and "open" to discussion. I end up doing some 4 on- one off - two- ons some weeks.

I don't really care - the money is good! ;)

I have worked this kind of schedule before, it stinks!! Does your unit have a wishlist for days off? If so, I would put myself on it real quick! Or try to switch with someone.

I have done it before too and you are right it stinks. I just came off a 4 day stretch of 12s. I had 2 days off before it and to make it even worse I had worked 4 days that week. I was beat...but then I had 4 days off. I work days though so it is a bit easier then working nights and doing it. I did that for a few years and my last 2 semesters of school I did 3 12s in a row on nights every week and went to school the rest of the week. I would say talk to your NM. Perhaps she does not think it is bothering you. You need to take care of yourself or you can not take care of your patients effectively. Good luck to you!!!

When I was first married and was trying to pay off major bills I worked the weekend program at the hospital 7A - 7P on Saturday/Sunday, and worked as a full time college faculty member Monday - Friday. I worked 187 days in a row without a day off. Paid off one of my major bills and went flex at the hospital. Oh, and I was working on my MSN too during that time. A girls gotta do what a girls gotta do! ;) (I didn't have any kids at that time, made a big difference).

Wow. 187 days without a day off? How did you stay sane? Or at least sane enough to not be committed?

Gosh, you guys are giving me a tension headache!! I have nothing but admiration for you!

I've always been VERY militant about my schedule, even when I worked full time.

Now I work part-time in LTC. The DON puts out a schedule once a month - well, I recently discovered that she has an 'add-on' schedule in the med room - and will add a persons name to a night - without calling to tell them or anything.

I discovered this recently while looking for something else, and saw that she'd added my name on for a couple of nights - if I hadn't 'accidently' seen this I would have known nothing about it. Called her the next day and said 'no way' - if you want me to pick up, you have to call first.:madface:
