Going from bad to worse...

well, well, well....our DON just dropped another bombshell.. straight from Corporate... and it was evident that it really pained her to have to share more bad news...

Guess what they're up to NOW?

Effective immediately there will no longer be a "charge nurse". One of the three RNs at our clinic ( includes our DON/Clinical Mgr.) is charge nurse for the day.. we take turns. The charge nurse assumes responsibility for all that goes on that day, takes all the orders, communicates orrders and info to patients and family, does all the paperwork at the end of the day, validation of txs. and meds on paper and in the computer, etc., etc, etc.

SO... charge nurse status has now been eliminated.. I guess for the sole reason that the charge nurse makes a whopping $1.00 extra per hour that day. INSTEAD, the former "charge" will now be reclassified as "Teamleader"... and there's nothing in any contract about a teamleader or a differential in pay... simply because we never HAD a "teamleader" before. Mere semantics, right? Sure. But good enough for them. They found one more way to screw us out of our last dollar.

The teamleader will still be doing the SAME things.. same responsibilities, same added workload, same stress... and all at one dollar LESS per hour now !

I don't think so. Not this nurse.

It just goes to show that Corporations will stop at nothing, for the bottom line...even at the risk of losing more and more nurses...and jeopardizing patient care. I'm in a similar situation where I work, where the old cliche' "less is more" is driving away nurses in DROVES...and is making their mission statement out to be a pathetic JOKE. :(

Yikes, Jnette. I'm sorry that, once again, TPTB can't see the forest for the trees.

Have you thought of a nice way to decline this latest "honor?"

I understand where you're coming from: that it's not about the lousy dollar; if mgt can't see that cutting it out just proves how little they value their nurses.....grrrrrrrr.

Again - what if they had a war and no=one came? What would happen if no-one would do this joB?

Well, Gwen, I discussed this very thing with my DON... the thing is, we really, really LOVE our DON. She has always been so supportive and is always there on the floor with us helping us with our work, AND somehow managing to get hers done as well.. ad God knows they abuse her ! The last thing we want is to stick her with the extra now. That's our dilemma. She's the one who would end up having to do it. She DID say she will be writing a letter to corporate regarding this, and we should as well. She also is willing to take the risk of "disciplinary action" along with us by not attending the next inservice planned in a few weeks. Even our regional mgr. agrees that this is pushing the envelope, but I don't know how much of an advocate she will be on our behalf.. we'll soon find out. She's still new to her job.. she might not want to risk losing it.

At least I seem to have made some progress by drumming this into everyone's head... I seriously doubt that anyone would have done any more than cry in their beer and bend over and take it as usual. Folks here just aren't used to doing the "risky" thing. I do believe that if our DON follows through with the "mutiny" idea, the rest will also.. they'll be looking to her, not me. She does agree that nurses are being handed the short end of the stick, and she does NOT like it... I think it may have just taken someone to encourage her that we really DON'T have to take it, and that there really IS someone who will say "enuff is enuff"! (me, of course... that "northern attitude" heh, heh...) and that ignited a spark in her to put her voice into action. When SHE does, the rest will follow.

So... I'll certainly be writing MY letter and yes, Ratched, I'm trying hard here to formulate a "tactful" letter which will state how I feel without being ugly or rude. It'll take a few days to have it down and to do some editing, but I can surely write a good one when I put my mind to it !

So we'll see how it goes from here... thanx for all your support, Guys ! :)

oh, jnette, I feel for you. You've had so many hard times for this corp. When are they going to be willing to give back to their employees?

"[A]nd there's nothing in any contract about a teamleader...."

Do you have a union contract that mentions the charge nurse position? I'm sure you've heard the saying, "If it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck..." Same concept applies to charge nurses. Just because they call it something else doesn't change the fact that it's a charge nurse. Contact your union rep if you have one.

Yeh.. they really suk. They have NO idea how good they've got it with us.. I mean this is a clinic whose staff virtually NEVER call in sick, NEVER just "lay out"... we have had zero tardiness since my first day some 6 years ago.. zero safety/accident issues...

and they wan to to start pushing our buttons? What, are they CRAZY? This is the THANX ?

Y'know, I despise them so much, I really don't even WANT their thanx.. our patients give us plenty and it is far more genuine.

So don't thank me, just quit treating us like McDonald's employees, for crying out loud ! And quit STEALING from me ! :(

From what I have heard McDonald's employee's are often treated much better than we nurses.

This really stinks.
