Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am very dissapointed by how nurses are treated by doctors. I recently started a new job where I get a first hand look at this (I am only a student) and it is very depressing. They are talked down to and just seem like glorified order takers. I am suprised the doctors don't expect them to go pick up their take out lunch for pete's sake.:deadhorse

Are there nice docs out there or am I just seeing the cranky, power trippy ones?? YIKES!!!:stone

On my MS floor, as a general rule the doctors are great, they value the nurses opinion and ask about their patients from the ones that are caring for them first hand. We do have a couple of "jerks" . We have a hospitalist that thinks he is God personified with a Dr Jekl Mr Hide mentality and a surgeon who watches TV while consulting with his patients:angryfire There are good and bad in all walks of life so I try to enjoy the nice ones and secretly dream about poking pencils in the others eyes!!!!:rotfl:

"I try to enjoy the nice ones and secretly dream about poking pencils in the others eyes!!!!"

HA! I can think of doing something a lot more satisfying to the jerks, but this would work too!!

as someone who works with surgeons everyday, its hard to imagine not talking with them. imagine having to deal with residents who think they know everything, too! in reality, of all the surgeons i work with, the vast majority are decent, if not a joy. there are a couple of whiners (which i hate), and only a couple of loudmouths. since i also answer their pagers during a case, i can say that some nurses' fear is so obvious. they talk fast, i can barely understand them. sometimes they forget to mention the pt's name, just a room number. yes, be prepared, have information available, but remember you're talking to a person who wants to be treated like a person. for instance, i answered a pager that had just had multiple pages over the span of 2 minutes - all with the same text message - room 4012x - sticu 911. so, i called the sticu. i could barely hear the person on the phone over the blare of bells, laughter, etc. so, i repeated myself, asked what the page was regarding, the surgeon was scrubbed. the rn yells into the phone, "the pt is in respiratory distress, i'm transferring them to the po..." and she hangs up. hmmm... i got to the bottom of the matter within 15 minutes...i called the intern. but why did i have to go through all that? you see what i mean, i hope.

i amsorry if this sounds dumb but what is a hospitalist

You're not dumb. A hospitalist is a doctor who only takes care of pts in the hospital, like if they have a doctor who doesn't have priveleges at a certain facility or they don't have a family doctor at all.

Heck I have run into more rude and a**hole nurses than I have MD/DO's to be honest. Most of the Dr I know are nice.

I would agree with that. I too have encounter far more nasty/rude nurses than MD's.

We have one Doc that writes Please after all of his orders. When it was commented on he said, would you prefer if I write do it now bi**h lol. Most of the docs I work with are wonderful. But everyone can have a bad day nurses included.

:yeahthat: I LOVE IT !!!!!

We have a doctor that will hand us a chart with orders and reiderate these are orders not just suggestions! 9 times of of 10 he's kidding. Just serious with a couple of nurses who have problems following through.

I currently work with 4 docs. 3 are excellent to work with, value your opinion and and even ask what you think (you are with that patient many more hours a day than they are). The other one depends on his mood. The main thing I have found out is agreeing with a prior post. They will respect you more if you have the information for them and know what is going on.

Most doctors that I have encountered over the years are very nice. I can truthfully say that I can count on one hand the number of rude arrogant doctors that I have had to deal with since becoming a nurse.

I command respect by my own professional - yet friendly - approach to them. If they talk down to me like I'm not a valuable part of their patients team of healthcare providers, I have NO problem asserting myself with them about their condescending attitude.

Patient care isn't about the doctors -- or the nurses for that matter. It's about the patients we care for, so it is ESSENTIAL that the WHOLE healthcare team works well together. :)

In all fairness, I'd like to say that there are some nice/good doctor's out there. I work at a pediatric practice and at a hospital in case management. I have worked with the pediatric clinic for 9 years, and love them! They are down to earth and treat their staff like "people"! I consider them to be friends and not just employers! On the other hand, working with surgeons and cardiologist, you will run into a few "ego's and hot heads", but there are some that are pleasant to be around.

Thanks for listening,
