Hi, I am a rising 4th year nursing student doing a project for a statistics class and am designing an experiment to see if there is a correlation between being a nurse and donating blood. I would really appreciate any responses to the poll! Also, feel free to leave comments, especially if you are ineligible to donate, I would be interested to know why. Thanks! (I posted this in the poll threads but only got a few responses, so I figured I would try it here)
I donated frequently. Then for many years my hemoglobin was always just below their cut off. I drive by a Red Cross donation office every day to work and kept telling myself I should donate again. My blood came back hepatitis B surface antigen positive!!!!!!! It was tested twice!! I was (am) so shocked. I have always gotten my hepatitis B vaccinations and been tested several times for titers!
I started donating a couple of years ago. I'm O negative so they schedule me for donation again as soon as I'm eligible and give me a couple of reminder calls. The phlebotomists think that I'm a little weird because I like to watch the needle go in.
They call me brave too for watching the needle go in. Not so brave when I see blood.
I teach CPR classes for the Red Cross, but I won't donate blood to them again. I donate at other sources occasionally when available, after asking a few questions first.
I had two terrible experiences of passing out - the second one I even warned them it had happened before, and they were rushing, had no juice or crackers on site. If I move and don't have to be subjected to that particular improperly run group, I'd try more often. If I can sit and eat afterwards, I'm fine. When I'm tossed towards the door with a quick "Thank you, see you in a couple months." I'm not so fine.
you bet! Even though i seem to always pass out and throw up each time. OH and last time a student tried to stick me. Small veins, nervous/cold me... and a nervous student didnt go very well, even i know (being a student) you arent supposed to dig aorund once your in. :) But i TRY everytime! GO B rh neg blood! WOO.
PS- i make my boyfriend go too.. he is O neg :)
I have donated twice. I get very queasy and pass out from blood draws - no one is sure why as I have no problems with needles or blood (coming from myself or others). Perhaps it is because the blood comes out super fast (I fill up the pint in 3 mins). It just ruins my entire day (and often I'm working or in school) so I don't do it often as being out for a full day isn't feasible.

(I'm a CNA, not a nurse) I donate blood whenever I am able. Currently I have been under needle stick precautions for the past year but will donate again.
