Okay a friend and I are having a disagreement about daylight savings. She's adamant that since she worked Sunday dayshift she worked 13 hours, since night shift only worked 11. I agree that she woke up an hour early but still only worked a normal 12 hour shift. What's your opinion? There is a Starbucks gift card on the line here!

I agree with you, she wasn't working when the time shift occurred, she just had to wake up an hour earlier. She physically wasn't working for 13 hours.

If she punched in at (for the sake of argument) 7am on Sunday March 10th and punched out at 7pm March 10th thats only 12 hours worked.

Now, IF she worked nights...and punched in a 7pm on Saturday and punched out at 7am on the Sunday we 'fall back' then she would have worked 13 hours. Just as if someone working the 'spring' ahead, punches in a 7pm on Saturday and punches out at 7am Sunday, they actually only worked 11 hrs, b/c at the 2am mark the clock is moved ahead an hour.

No matter if we were 'springing ahead' (move the clock up an hour) or 'falling back' (moving the clock back an hour), it does not affect the amount of hours the day shift is working.

Your friend worked her normal 12 hours.

Wow, didn't she notice she only worked 12 hours when..... there was no extra hour during her shift. That's not the kid of thing you would fail to notice.

Her logic is very flawed. On "fall back" the day has 25 hours. "spring forward" day only has 23 hours.

Please enjoy your Starbucks gift card :)

Sincerely,

Someone who always seems to end up working "fall back" 13 hour shifts.

Seems like a funny thing to have a bet about. Kind of like betting a starbucks card over whether or not the skiy is blue. Or if circles are round.

She worked 11 (spring) or 13 (fall) hours only if she was working at 0200, as that's the hour of the time change. So unless her day shift was 0100-1300, she only worked 12 hours.

Get a white chocolate mocha, that's some good stuff :)

Okay this is hilar, just went to look at the status so I could let you guys know her rationale but she's edited it! She still claims that she got up an hour early (true) and worked 13 hours, and all that's left is me saying if she shows me her timecard showing 13 hours I'd mail her a starbucks card. So very very weird. And yes it seems silly, especially when she got all mad at me saying I just wasn't getting it.....okay then! Glad I'm not the only one thinking day shift on Sunday worked 12 hours!!

See, that's the thing about losing an hour of sleep...your mind does weird things and the simplest concepts can become complicated.

Or she finally realized she was wrong and was trying to cover it up!

So, ask her if she gave back an hours worth of pay when we 'fell back' (in Novemeber) since she got to sleep an extra hour :)

I'm confused as to how she would think she worked 13 hours. The time change occurred on the night shift when the time changed from 01:59 to 03:00 one minute later. The day shift of 0700-1900 is 12 hours. It's 12 hours the day before and after the fall back night and the day before and after the spring forward night. The length of the day shift is never affected by this.
