The best job I ever had before becoming a nurse was being a Mother. :kiss
The worst job I ever had before becoming a nurse was being a wife.
Jun 12, '03Best Job: current one, as a nurse consultant to a state Dept. of Transportation. I take impaired drivers off the road, make policy, advise the legislature. Its a great nursing gig.
Worst Job: Working as a "Fotomate" at a Fotomat booth in the winter of 1978 in New Hampshire. You had to answer the phone "Hi! This is your Fotomate!". Local toughs played chicken by driving very fast at the booth. You had to beg a local merchant to let you use their bathroom. Pay was about 1.95$ per hour.
Jun 16, '03Right on, Renee.
My best job before becoming a nurse also was being a mother, and now I just loooooove being a grandmother. It's sooo much fun!
My worst job ever was working in a laundromat. I worked on a shirt presser that had to be set at 400 degrees, and it was torture working on it in the summer. No AC or fan for me.
Jun 16, '03Worst job: Midnight janitor service at a slaughterhouse. Lasted a week...
Best job: US Army orthopedic technician
Jun 18, '03Very Interesting thread!
Best job before nursing: working summers at my Aunt's resort.
Worst job: retail at a drugstore type establishment...yucchh.
Since becoming a nurse my two very favorite gigs have been home private duty (I got very attached to a few clients) and when I did outpatient cardiac rehab.
'Course I luv my critical /acute care too, but I really enjoyed those other 2...probably due to the nice people there.
Jun 18, '03Worst Job: It's a toss up between being a combat engineer for the U.S. Army for two years or being on the clean up crew in a processing plant. We had to wear full uniforms, including overalls, googles, hard hats and we took blowers and blew off all of the processing from the machines. It was so dirty you could not see past six feet in front of you. Did it for no benefits and mediocre pay-- not a good time in my life.
Best Job: For the past two and a half years i have been providing direct care to clients with mental illness and developmental disabilities. The pay isn't great and either are the benefits, but i love feeling like i am actually helping and serving people.
Jun 18, '03Best Job : 9-1-1 Dispatcher
Worst job: Mcdonalds cook!
~ sorry not a nurse, still kicking butt in 9-1-1 Dispatch~
Jun 18, '03Worst job working as a unit secretary on a L&D floor. The nurses treated you like you didn't have a brain. And now that I am a RN it boggled their mind that I was going to nursing school and shuffling charts for them in too. `I learned that L&D is not my forte!
Jun 18, '03Best job was junior and senior year in HS at a nursery/greenhouse on Long Island's north shore. It was like a family to me and I really got to know the people there. We'd have parties in the back fields and selling Christmas trees when you're half drunk was a kick Sold a tree to Billy Joel and Christie Brinkly when they were still married. Yoko Ono shopped there with Sean.
Worst: Fast food. Awful. grease everywhere, crappy food. Crappy salary. Crappy, crappy, crappy.
