i can't believe that this is for real it may have been true in the 30s ??but the ww2 changed a lot of things.,..women worked and earned paychecks==
in the 50s ,at least in the south ,the women marched for civil rights and for equal pay
the woman vote became something to be considered when decisions were to be made...
To the young ones who are skeptical: look in your history books. It wasn't that long ago that women were not allowed to vote, or serve on juries, or even be doctors without bias. And it is an even shorter time span since women have been allowed to serve in any capacity in the military other than nurse or secretary.....now we can serve in combat and hold positions of authority.....even captain ships. Unheard of 20 years ago, and still unapproved by many of our older generation.
I'm sorry, but military women were not only nurses and secretaries twenty years ago. I served as an air force intelligence officer in the late 1970s, and I worked with other women in the same capacity, some of whom had served in Vietnam.
It is true, though, that I was not allowed to apply for a flying position due to my gender. And the sex discrimination was rampant, and nobody cared. Tailhook was a way of life.

You misread: the "20 years ago" comment was in regards to serving in combat and captaining ships. Sorry if I wasn't clear on that. During the Korean War and the early part of the the Vietnam War, women were nurses and secretaries.
Outdated?!? I occasionally lurk on fundamentalist and conservative Christian bulletin boards and plenty of women still believe in putting their husbands first and deferring all decision making to him. Who am I to criticize? As long as someone is aware they have other options and choose their way of life, they can do what they want.

Whether or not the article itself was real, the attitude of women at the time was very real. Women were subserviant and were considered second to their husbands. They were expected to follow their husbands' orders and to center their lives around the men. Boys were raised to believe they were more important than girls, and girls were raised to take care of their men. Equality of the sexes did not exist, and "I am Woman, hear me roar" would have illicited stares of disbelief.
