Any recommendations on a book and/or website that focuses on Cultural differences/ rituals during childbirth?

My first L&D pt was Indonesian and Islamic. I was fascinated by the amount of family support she received. The Mom was very stoic and their only request was to keep the placenta. They were an amazing couple and the Dad was very involved (opposite of what I've been able to find online.) I realize everyone has individual experiences, but I am very interested in learning about cultural diversity in L&D.

Thanks!

Question about fetal position...

I was able to observe an incredible birth yesterday and I am curious about the position the baby was born in. The Mom was very petite (4'10") and delivered a 9 lb girl! The baby was born completely face-up (I know this is posterior position), but the Midwife said the NB's shoulders never rotated and remained transverse for the delivery. The midwife told everyone in the room it would be a long time before we ever saw another delivery like it.

I won't see the Midwife again to ask her specific questions about the birth; she works at a separate birthing center on the hospital campus where the Mom started her labor. The Mom was transported to the hospital L&D d/t fetal distress with prolonged pushing.

Any ideas?

I have lots of ideas but just got off a VERY long night shift and can't put coherent thoughts in order. I will be back to revisit this...meantime, someone smarter and more alert than I may be able to Help, Michele. I just wanted you to know, we are not ignoring you.

Smile Book suggestion

Hi,

I had to read Birth In Four Cultures by Brigitte Jordan/Robbie Davis -Floyd for a class I took once. If I remember correctly it was pretty interesting. Maybe an online search would give you a description. Good luck!

Question Midwifery certification

Hi, I'm not sure I am posting this question in the right place.
I am an LPN student. I have in the past worked with homebirth midwives and strongly believe in homebirth being a choice for normal pregnancy and birth. I do not want to go through becoming an RN ( as it is I will be 40 when I graduate from LPN program ) Anyone know of any way to get an CNM or at least a certificaton in Midwifery w/o first becoming an RN. I am in MI. I know the laws are diff. in diff. states.
Thank you in advance for anyone with any insight.
Psbink

THIS is an EXCELLENT suggestion. I have read this one myself. It may give you some very good insight, Michelle. This one should be added to our "recommended reading" area.

Yes, you can become a Certified Direct-Entry Midwife. You just have to find a program that features this training. This site may be helpful in information, fact-finding and finding a school for you!

Hope this helps
