Pay tends to be higher where the cost of living is higher, just because you're earning more doesn't mean you'll have more money in your pocket.

If you read the boards you'll see that there is a job shortage for new grads in FL, NY and CA.

If you find a job in FL starting salary is around $22 an hour.

okay are you a nurse in the Tampa Bay area?

Don't take this the wrong way, but unless the job market picks up before you graduate, you will be lucky to get ANY job. The only reason I got a job is because my mother has been working at this hospital for over 20 years and she is very well known and well-liked, but even with that, I still had to really sell myself. I am a new grad and will be making 21/hr in tampa area plus 4.50 extra for nights, and a wkd differential as well (can't remember how much). Also, if you don't need benefits, you can often get several more dollars an hour for a non-benefits position. And like the other poster mentioned, cost of living is higher in CA and NY, and you can check out some posts from new nurses there and the job market there is just as tough. But I wish you luck! I hope things start looking up before you graduate. All these new school are cranking out new nurses and there is more supply then there is demand.

Wow 21 an hr! Anyone know a ball park for a nurse with a BSN and 12 years experience? Moving to Valrico in aug and those salaries are scaring me.... Dont need health coverage btw ER/ ICU nurse

21 is just about normal pretty much throughout Florida. Orlando pays around the same. South Florida is a little higher here due to cost of living.

NY and CA also got hit hard by the recession. The $$ that youll be making would just be enough to cover the cost of living in those states

To Michelle: My advice would be - get a job in Tampa as a new grad, work a year or two and then go where your heart belongs. Also read CA and NY sections of this forum - it is extremely difficult to find a job as a new grad either in CA or NY. It is not easy here in FL but at least you are local and might know somebody. Besides, there is a huge plus - you are already here and there are no moving costs! Get to know people where you have your clinicals, talk to unit managers, socialize, gather information, be nice and who knows - you might get hired there right after school. If you are young and single and have no kids and can manage your finances - NYC or CA would be great. Do not forget about state tax though (and city tax in NYC )

Good luck!;)

Klsana00, I don't think you need to worry about being insulted with a $21/hr offer. As an ER/ICU nurse you should be received with flowers and bon-bons. It's a tough market for new grads, but not for nurses with mileage and skills.

Tampa General told me today that they are not hiring new grads now, what a disgrace!
