  1. Just curious... why one would leave CA or TX and move to AZ? It is extremely hot, flat and dusty... The landscape is really depressing.
  2. I would go ahead and apply before coming to AZ. Some places offer relocation and sign on bonuses.
  3. I moved from FL to CA and do not miss it a bit. I know, the economy is bad here too but pay and benefits are so much better! I pay less for rent here in CA and my electric bill is 1/3 of what it was in FL. Go figure... Work culture and ethics are better too.
  4. Most case management positions in hospitals require 3 to 5 years experience. Same with insurance companies. Why don't you try home health? You can make your own schedule working PRN. After some time you can work at the same agency as a case manager. Health departments clinics maybe? Nursing informatics is a great field. However, you need some coursework (at least certificate) or a degree. There are not so many jobs out there though...
  5. Thanks a lot! I will know more about the position next week. Meanwhile, I am shopping for health insurance... In general, it is going to cost me a little more than employer's insurance and it will cover less. Besides, employer's insurance premiums are pre-tax, and my own is going to be post-tax. However, there will still be a significant difference between PRN and full time paycheck. I will probably get less tax return next year (I do not think my premiums will exceed 7.5% of AGI)... But it is nice to have extra money every two weeks... Hm... I think I might just do full-time.
  6. Hm... No PRN folks here?
  7. To Michelle: My advice would be - get a job in Tampa as a new grad, work a year or two and then go where your heart belongs. Also read CA and NY sections of this forum - it is extremely difficult to find a job as a new grad either in CA or NY. It is not easy here in FL but at least you are local and might know somebody. Besides, there is a huge plus - you are already here and there are no moving costs! Get to know people where you have your clinicals, talk to unit managers, socialize, gather information, be nice and who knows - you might get hired there right after school. If you are young and single and have no kids and can manage your finances - NYC or CA would be great. Do not forget about state tax though (and city tax in NYC ) Good luck!
  8. Hello! I might be relocating from one part of FL to another. I am considering a PRN position instead of full time. I would still work 40 hr/week but no PTO, medical or dental. I am thinking of getting my own insurance - it would cost me almost as much as company's insurance if I get it through a professional organisation (the hospital's medical is not very good anyway). I have never worked PRN and I am little concerned... What if they start laying off people? I hear PRNs go first. What about workers comp or disability? What if I get hurt at work? Or get sick? (I obviously won't get paid for staying sick at home since I have no PTO) Will they send PRNs home first because their census is low? The pay is good but I think I would feel less protected. Am I freaking out? Ovethinking it? I am a single mom so I need a job security. I need to make sure the move is worthwhile. Any thoughts or experience? I hope you will help me decide. Thanks!

Who "they?" Are your referring to any particular hospital?
  10. Thank you, Megan. I am surprised noone else wanted to discuss this situation. Maybe I should have been more specific... like "How do I get a job in NY living in another state?" or "Out of state candidate... what are my chances?" Anyway, I am willing to give it a try, and perhaps I will share my experience on here. If it does not work out I will use my plan B and C.
  11. Hello:wink2: I am thinking of relocating to NYC from another state. I read almost the whole NY section and the perspectives look kinda gloomy. We all know it is tough out there for new grads... and what about us, recent new grads? I have BSN and 1 year of experience in OR. What are my chances of getting a job right away? Is it possible to get a phone interview and get hired over the phone? I know that some hospitals (e.g. in California) have that practice. I can't afford to fly to NYC for every interview... or just move there, pay for an apartment and all expenses (I am quite well aware of how much it is all going to cost!) and wait who knows how long... If had a job offer in my hand before moving I would have a better idea about where to live and what school to chose for my kid. Or should I just abandon the whole NY idea and apply in CA? I would hate to spend money for NY license and end up in another state... I am just trying to figure out this situation for myself and would appreciate any help. I do not know anybody in NY.
  12. I am a new nurse - straight out of school and work in OR. What I noticed about this hospital is surgeons get away with pretty much everything (I talked to some nurses, and they sadly confirm this). I've never heard of reporting abusive ones to management, and it seems our leaders are not willing to do anything about. Other nurses say there are very few leaders that would defend us. Surgeons bring their cases to us, and we should be gratefull that we have jobs and the hospital makes money.I can hardly imagine myself talking privately to a surgeon about him yelling at me earlier. Yes, I make minor mistakes and sometimes I sound naive. But I am a bright person - I am still learning and I do my best; and btw I still love OR! I heard that one new girl had been fired a while ago, and it happened during her probationary period. She tried to resolve her issues with a surgeon, and I guess she was not very polite either. So I am quiet... Sometimes I get upset; I know I do not derserve to be treated like that. But I also know that I need experience, and then we will see...
