Recent New Grads: Job Search Poll

Nurses New Nurse

Published

To recent new grads: I'm trying to get some idea of what my hubby will be facing when he graduates with his ASN this Fall. If you could kindly respond with the approximate dates you graduated, took your boards, and the date you were hired (or if you are still looking for employment as an RN). Thanks! :D

Specializes in ED.

Good luck to your hubby!

I applied in early Jan. 2009, received my job offer (& accepted!) in late Jan. 2009, graduated May 2009, tested in June 2009, and will start working Sept. 2009.

My advice: Apply ASAP! My classmates who waited around to decide on a department were too late. The hospital that hired me ultimately decided not to hire new med/surg nurses. Don't wait!

Hello & Thanks!

I WILL be entering into an RN residency. It starts Sept. 1 and will last until March 1. It will consist of 3 months in-classroom and then the rest of the time will be with a preceptor. It's quite different than some of my classmates' programs, but we'll see how it goes! I'm excited :)

Edit: The job was posted in January '09 for the September class. I'm not sure why they hire so quickly, but they do :)

I see. thank you NewGradRN09. congrats again! I'm excited for you too! :)

by the way, is your program strict about gpa and experience?

Graduated May 11, accepted job offer June 19 to start August 19, ATT late June, NCLEX July 15, Pearson vue trick 2 days later. Georgia.

Personally, it was difficult and frustrating for me applying before I got my license because so many places, at least in Ga, it seemed, wanted you to have a license in order to apply. In exasperation, I called up a place in Louisiana, and they instantly invited me for an interview even beford NCLEX, and I got the job. Now that I have a license, it would probably be easier to find a job here in Ga than it was before.

I graduated on May 15th, took boards July 22nd, and have YET to find a job!!! I lost count at 50 applications submitted...but I am estimating that I'm workin' on about 80 or so. I am beyond frustrated. :banghead::cry:

We had to have a 3.0 gpa to be considered, though higher was definitely desired. They also asked for a copy of our transcript to see the break-down of our grades.

As far as experience, I don't think they were that strict about that. They hired 6 people into the program from my school and I'm an EMT, 1 woman was a camp nurses aide, 1 woman was a PCA, 1 woman was a home health aide, and 2 had no experience whatsoever.

Specializes in ED Nursing, Critical Care Nursing.

Hi,

I graduated in mid-May, 2009 and took the NCLEX-RN on July 31, 2009. I found out that I passed on August 7th, and had my license in hand on August 22. I had already been investigating jobs with a local healthcare corporation, and interviewed for an ED RN job in June. I should explain that I won a scholarship that paid my nursing education via this corporation, so I knew that I was going to be employed SOMEWHERE. I will be in an 8 month critical care program for new RN graduates. I was offered the job in June, pending completion of the NCLEX and official licensure. I will start my first ED shift tomorrow night in the ED, and in about one month, the critical care program will begin. It will be a mixture of classroom learning and clinical experiences throughout the hospital (mostly in the ED for me, obviously). I'm located in southern IL, and I feel very lucky to have the position that I do. After reading other comments on here, I'm SO surprised that so many new graduates are having difficulty with finding entry level jobs. All throughout nursing school, we heard the phrase "You will be instantly employable..." Obviously, that isn't true throughout the country. So, I feel so fortunate. I didn't have any nursing experience when I got this job, but I did have EMS/paramedic experience. Good luck to all new RNs out there as you try to located the job of your dreams!

Specializes in EMS, ED, Trauma, CEN, CPEN, TCRN.
