I finished school last week and am waiting for my ATT while studying for NCLEX. I applied for NG positions in 3 of 4 hospital systems in my area (SE Va). I was more aggressive in my approach with my current employer and a University Hospital system than the other. I started applying in Jan-Feb and got hired following my first interview for an ED position. I have interviewed 2 more times just to make sure I was making the best choice for me (was offered 1 other job).
That said, I am in the minority in my class of 60 I think there are only 20ish that have jobs and most of them were internal candidates like myself.

I got a job offer in late February and accepted then. I start in July. I started applying for jobs in the semester before my final semester - I was able to sign up for several career events that way before others filled up the slots, so I had a few opportunities others in my class didn't because they waited until their last semester. I advise looking around very early, earlier than you think you would have to!
I graduated in Dec 08, had a baby a few days later and didn't even think about NCLEX or a job until the end of January. I took NCLEX the last week of Feb and started looking for jobs at that time too. I sent out a ton of applications, had one interview (but didn't get the job) and ended up accepting a part time position at the LTC facility I had been working at as a CNA while in school. I started my RN job in April (but I did go back and work as a CNA while studying for NCLEX).
I graduated in May 2008, and passed my boards in late July. I started looking for jobs in March (my state didn't have "graduate nurse" status). After 15 interviews in 3 different states, I was hired at a nursing home in January 2009. The job was canceled 45 minutes into my first shift. I found my current job 2 months later.

Why was your job canceled 15 mins into first shift?

To recent new grads: I'm trying to get some idea of what my hubby will be facing when he graduates with his ASN this Fall. If you could kindly respond with the approximate dates you graduated, took your boards, and the date you were hired (or if you are still looking for employment as an RN). Thanks!
