Recent New Grads: Job Search Poll

Nurses New Nurse

Published

To recent new grads: I'm trying to get some idea of what my hubby will be facing when he graduates with his ASN this Fall. If you could kindly respond with the approximate dates you graduated, took your boards, and the date you were hired (or if you are still looking for employment as an RN). Thanks! :D

I graduated end of January 09', took boards in mid-March, and still haven't found anythinge except per diem at drug treatment facility. Hope it turns into full time though. It is right up my alley.

Specializes in Oncology.

Hi

I graduated Dec 2008, took my boards in February and was offered a job at the end of May.

Specializes in DOU.

I was hired before graduation in December 2008, and took the boards about 3 weeks later. I started working at the end of January.

Specializes in Operating Room, Ortho, Neuro, Trauma.

I graduated in May

NCLEX July 24th

Job offer--end of June

Start August 24th! A residency program.

Georgia.

Can't wait.

Specializes in Med/Surg.

Graduated May 9th.

NCLEX July 6th

1 phone interview for grad nurse (didn't get it)

1 in person interview for RN position (it was today)

1 quick pre interview phone interview RN position (it was today)

No job yet...waiting to see if I got in person interview or another interview for the last phone interview. Or another interview for something else! Hopefully something soon!

Michigan just isn't hiring!

Graduated in December 2008, passed my boards in March 2009. Only recently had a phone interview and flying out to have a person interview... (out-of-state job). Be prepared to be searching for a while.

Those who received jobs right after graduated are super lucky.... I on the other hand have not had such luck

I am in Florida. I graduated on June 18. I accepted a job offer before graduation. I took my boards on July 16, which was the day after I got my ATT. I start working on August 3.

I would estimate that about 1/2 my class has job offers at this point, less than 2 months after graduation.

I'm somewhat the anomaly, as I went to nursing school to backup a career that was still viable when I graduated:

Graduated May, 2006.

Passed NCLEX and was licensed September, 2008.

After job searching for eight months, landed my first gig July, 2009.

I got the distinct feeling that employers were uncomfortable about the time-gap between graduation and licensure. So my advice would be for your husband to get licensed as soon as possible after he graduates and begin the Job Search immediately.

Specializes in cardiac/education.

Eh, I think employers are uncomfortable about the time gap between licensure and actually working that first job. Mez, you waited over two years to take and pass NCLEX and the only thing I think that says about you is "WOW, he must be smart..or very determined!!" (I mean, who freaking takes NCLEX two years after NS!, daunting!). Unlike me whom pretty much was immediately lincensed only to not work....there comes the red flag. Not that it was easy for you to get a job either!!:chuckle (CONGRATS again, I'm jealous!)

passed my nclex last march and got a job last june and another job this july.

Specializes in Neurosciences, Med-Surg-CNA.

I graduated May 2009, took boards at the end of June, had an interview 3 days after boards, offered the job, but it doesn't start until September 28th.... it sucks having to wait so long but at least I have something.

I graduated May 16, 2009. I started applying in Feburary 2009. Went on my first interview in March 2009, second interview April 2009, third interview May 2009, and fourth interview (phone) end of May 2009. I was not job offered for any of them.

I decided to go back to the corporate world and went on 4 interviews in the corporate world, landing a job in the insurance industry. All four interviews were in June 2009.

Took NCLEX and passed July 8, 2009.

Went on an interview for a RN job on July 9, 2009 and got job offered within 3 hours on the same day! Start August 3 and it's for the MICU and it's a New Grad Residency Program at a Level I Teaching hospital. I couldnt be more excited!

So from the time I graduated, passed NCLEX and got my first job offer and will start actually working is 3 months total.

And I am in Missouri.
