New Grad

Nurses New Nurse

Hi, I am new to this site and have heard great things about it. I am hoping someone could help me out. I am a new grad with my BSN. I live in WI where currently we do not have a shortage of nurses which is making it very hard for me to find a job. Does anyone know of any information on what areas currently have a shortage of nurses and are hiring new grads.

Everyone talks about the Dakotas, but I can't speak to that personally. Most places in the country have an abundance of nurses, and new grads are struggling to find work. Apply anywhere you'd consider moving. Do you have other healthcare experience? That can help in finding a new position. Also, have you made any connections in your clinicals that can help you land a position? That's how I landed my job offer, and I live in one of the most competitive markets in the US.

That is my problem. I do t have any experience. Fresh out and having a really hard time landing a job in a hospital around here.

Same here...i just passed the nclex..but im an RN in the philippines with more than 2 yrs of experience there...havin a hard time lookin for a job because they dont consider my foreign experience and they like it more if the new grad has a US based bsn degree...plus new grads from the west coast are applying here in the east side

You may need to apply to areas other than acute care (hospital). It is taking new grads on average 6-12 months or more to find their first position and a great many of them are NOT in the hospital. Good luck to you.

Ouch, it's a tough market right now. I'd suggest looking around this site; there are boards devoted especially to new grads (First Year of Nursing), Career Advice (can't recall the exact name, but it's there!). Reading through the threads will hopefully help you figure something out.

I am a new grad and just got hired at a long term care facility. It's not my first choice but as a new grad, experience is important. I am fortunate to land a job before I even took my NCLEX (still not scheduled!). It may not be where you want, apply to every opportunity available. Good luck!

When I graduated a year ago, I remember Oklahoma had a somewhat high demand for nurses.

... Thats if you can find where Oklahoma is

Look for residency programs. They vary as far as experience goes. For example, in Colorado you can't have any work as an RN, while in Oregon you could have up to one year of experience. If you can, I'd look at moving.

I took a clinic job for about 6 months then got into a residency program in critical care (my dream job!). I am in Oregon and it took me over 200 applications to land my residency spot. Don't get too discouraged, look at it like a numbers game.

I'm a new grad ADN, and just landed my first job in a unit I wanted in the hospital in the Milwaukee area. It took some foot work and not giving up but everyone from my class has a job. We graduated in December, NCLEX in Feb for most of us.

I had zero health care experience either. I called in favors for references and people I knew to hand deliver my resume etc to managers. I got hired at a job fair from a recruiter that remembered my resume from applying. Took me about 200 applications and 4 interviews to get the job!

So it really depends on where you are in WI but the MKE area is hiring new RNs in the hospitals.
