disappointed with job offer

So the hospital I worked in as an aide while in school recently gave me an offer to work on a med surg floor. I was really excited to work on the floor that I've been working on for 8months now, but it's an entirely different floor. Its also a night position. I feel I won't get as much experience working on this floor during the night. I worked there a few times as an aide floating, it reminds me of a nursing home. Of the 18 patients or so I'd have, more than half would need total care.

I am wondering if I just being a snotty baby about it and should just take the job, or should I try to find a job outside of this hospital? I need some honest feedback.

How many other offers of employment do you have?

A bona fide job offer vs holding out for the "perfect" job offer.

I know which I would choose. There are plenty of skills to develop...assessment, time management, prioritization, delegation, chart review, nursing order QC, care plan evaluation

I know i need to just get over myself, I was just really looking forward to working in mom/baby. It is just so disapointing that these last 8 months were not enough to get me into my own department.

I had to work M/S for my first year before I could move into my specialty.

It is disappointing, and I'm sorry. I also didn't get into my desired department right away. But you know what? I learned so much that I ended up applying to my ER dream job. Get in there, get some experience and keep on bugging the manager in your dream area =)

I'm not sure how this would work out or even be an option but could you ask them to shadow someone for a night or two? I know we all want to be paid but maybe even volunteer a few hours and see if you like it. It would be worth it to me to volunteer if it is a job I know I'd benefit from in many ways. Best of luck!!

Don't take it so personally. Managers can't just hire people because they want to. Even when someone quits, the manager usually has to go through a lengthy process to hire a replacement. The position has to be reviewed & 'approved' before they can even interview. Everything is tied to financial performance which drives the labor budget.

Working nights is much less stressful. It's much easier to master time management because there are fewer interruptions. In my experience, Night Owls are much better at working as a team... pitching in to help whenever you need them.

In this job market for new grads, be happy you HAVE a job! You could be one of the many new grads pounding the pavement months after graduation & passage of NCLEX still waiting to get a job. Take the job, get some experience then when an opening comes up on the floor you want, apply.

When I was a new nurse I worked dayshift on a stepdown ICU and we had total care patients too. On a med/surg floor, you better believe you will get your experience and then some whether it's day or night shift. You will be dealing with sundowners, accuchecks, lab draws, admissions, and more. You'll most likely start off orienting on days then finish up on nights and may be glad you are on the night shift after you've gotten a taste.

The point is to get your experience then move on; it's up to you if you want to start sooner or later. Good luck, but I wouldn't pass up on the opportunity in front of me.

You are sooooo close to the one year mark. If you can hang on eight months, another four won't kill you, and it will look fantastic on your resume.

Just keep your nose clean and you should be able to transfer soon.

You should take it. You will be great at time management by the time you are able to transfer into the job you really want.

I know it's so very hard but try your best to hang in there until u can transfer - you've already done 8 months, and you can start looking for that spot u want very soon - I would start looking and planning what or where you would like to transfer to by month 11, you're almost there!!
