[COLOR=#000000]There should be a list of charges that you can/can't have in order to get your nursing license. Call your school to see if they have a list. Also keep in mind that even if it isn't on the list it NEVER guarantees you approval from the BON. Below is some information I came across that helps with some information you are asking. I am from PA and had two charges from 10 years ago. The application (authorization to test for NCLEX) ask's about any prior convictions. If you submit that with a "yes" they might require you to just send a letter of what happened and any rehabilitation you had, background check, etc. It was scary going through nursing school, acquiring all these student loans with knowing I have a chance that I couldn't even become a licensed LPN because of these charges. Luckily, I had nothing to worry about. I feel you don't either but it is always case by case with the BON (usually anyway). Hope the info below helps. [/COLOR] [COLOR=#000000]Both the school and the state/BON conduct background searches. The state/BON search uses the Department of Justice and FBI databases. It goes far deeper than the school search and reveals all court records, expunged, sealed, adjudicated, or dismissed cases. [/COLOR] Everything is discoverable You MUST follow the application instructions and report everything they tell you to report, whether you believe the information is hidden” or not. There are exceptions to reporting, but they will be clearly listed on the application. For example, in California you do not have to report marijuana-related offenses or minor traffic violations. Case by Case Most states/BONs handle each case individually. The state/BON looks for remorse and insight on your part. Did you comply with your community service and everything the court ordered? Have you demonstrated rehabilitation? Do you have insight into what caused you to engage in fighting and what you've learned? Gather all documents surrounding the event. All certified arrest and court records Obtain letters of reference to show how you've changed Compose a letter of the sequence of events in your own words (no excuses, just facts, can include personal contributing factors/situation)

I'm not sure how this would work out or even be an option but could you ask them to shadow someone for a night or two? I know we all want to be paid but maybe even volunteer a few hours and see if you like it. It would be worth it to me to volunteer if it is a job I know I'd benefit from in many ways. Best of luck!!

I went to LCCTC (Lancaster County Career and Technology) for my LPN. I was scared to go to school at age 29, with only having a home health aide position prior to attending school. I didn't know much but I went for it and right now I couldn't be happier in life. Having 4 kids is going to be a challenge but what appealed to me about the LPN program at LCCTC was that it was only a year (18 months if going in the evening), close to home and you start clinical's right away. I know someone that went through nursing school on methadone. Her test came up positive for it. She had to show the prescription. Nothing was mentioned about it again. This friend is currently a practicing LPN:)

I agree 100%. I knew as a nurse I would have to deal with things I don't agree with dealing with my Recovery. All the letter stated was what Idid to rehabilitate myself, which if someone was an addict before and was taking care of me, my mom, etc, is understandable to be asked what you did to rehabilitate yourself. This isn't asking for addresses, or even specific dates. This doesn't go on your license... I have been in recovery for 8 years, I'm on a health sustaining drug., I have learned to fight the battles that are worth it. I learned also that being honest is the best even if it's taking a risk. I wish I had time to tell my story. Anyway, back to the point. Its bull**** of what they are asking but to lie is never okay as a nurse.

I answered "Yes" and I had nothing you stated happen to me except the letter of rehabilitation. I did NOT have a restricted license or even a THREAT to do so, I didn't have to go into a monitoring program either. YES, these are possible but with explanation of your rehabilitation, no current charges or issues you should be golden. Like I said below, please, please utilize me for information because when I went through this myself a few months ago I wished I had someone who went through the process already.

I JUST went though this exact issue. You MUST answer this correctly IF you have any old charges of drugs etc. because they will see that you have had issues and will not give you an ATT (authorization to test) without needing a paper from you. The paper they need is just an explanation of the charges and what you did to rehabilitate yourself.. I can go into more detail but won't unless you need it. If you have a clean record and want to be honest go ahead and check the correct answer. They will most likely just need that information from you I stated above. My one piece of advice... ONLY TELL THEM WHAT THEY NEED TO KNOW. You don't have anything to worry about in my eyes. I had years clean and 10 year old charges. I just sent them that letter and they gave me my ATT. I'm here to guide you through the process if you need! I am from PA so it might differ a little..I'm not sure?

I love this story. I'd like to say that I would NEVER talk about someone that way but after all I am human. This makes me think twice when I go to judge people outloud and if anything this story will make me a better person. Think before you speak. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. Simple reminders that can make a huge difference in life. Thank you for your story, it reminds me of how easy it is to be judgemental and ruin someones nice day and how I NEVER want to be that person.

I appreciate your advice. I was told by SO many professional people, including a place that help people with barriers become employable or get into school that I can NOT be a nurse with my current situation. I was determined to make a life for myself and my daughter and kept on. I am now an LPN and extremely proud of myself for not listening to them. A little tid bit, I sent that program that told me I couldn't be a nurse my grades in school and they then offered me help. It felt good to prove them wrong and succeed WITHOUT them. :)

I graduated Aug.2014 and my school used ATI religiously! At times I HATED it because some of the tests were long. Overall I feel ATI helped but I didn't wait until I got the "green light" (which means they give you the ok to take the NCLEX) Having a personal coach and telling you where your strengths and weaknesses were helped. I hate when I hear people say to prepare in this and that . Honestly, no one is sure what is going to be on the test. I had a medium amount of pharm and A LOT of select all that apply questions ( which are my weakness ), medium amount of delegation and infection control. I walked out of that test center convinced I failed at 107 questions. To my surprise, I passed. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that ATI did help and prepare me, but it is expensive from what I hear (ours were automatically added in our tuition). My final and overall advice is to relax, do at LEAST 50-100 questions a day. Keep your head up! If I can do it, many, many others can!

I went through this recently... in the state of PA this is what happened to me. When I applied for my Authorization to Test for the NCLEX there is a question asking about arrests or something along those lines. When you check yes to that it automatically sends you to be evaluated. I had to send in a written statement about what happened, IN DETAIL, the outcome and then whatever rehabilitation I had done. Remember to only disclose what they know about. Only talk about what is on your record, because that is all they are asking for. Do not hurt yourself more in the long run by telling them things they didn't ask for. They give you 14 days to wait for a decision and if you do not hear from them by that time you can call them to ask the status of your ATT. Once you have your ATT and pass the NCLEX you are a NURSE! No restrictions, no monitoring service. Hopefully this helps answer some of your questions. :)

I'm from PA and I found out I passed by looking up on the State License website. I just searched in LPN Licenses and it popped up. Not sure if this is something you can do in your state?

I can tell you one thing, on my test a few weeks ago, about 70% of questions were Select All that Apply. What a nightmare for me because that was my weak spot. I walked out of there calmly convinced I had NOT passed and I would continue to study for the re-take. To my surprise I was wrong and I passed. Keep your head up! Study, study, study!
