I saw something new and scary

Ive done this for a long long time now. And for the first time in a long time I saw someting new. A mother had brought her teenage daughter in for drinking her own urine. The pt had no c/os other than her mother bringing her into the ER for eval.

Apparently there are some alledged health benefits to this, but the thought just boggles my mind.I hope this isnt some new trend out there

And to think you kissed your grandma on the cheek. :rotfl: Sorry.

Remember what Rip Torn said on Dodgeball..."Do I HAVE to drink my own urine? NO, I do it because it's sterile and I enjoy the taste..."

eww. What possible health benefits? Now my grandmother says washing your face in your own urine will clear you skin up, but I'd never drink it, if it came out it's meant to be out for a reason.

many facial products have urea listed in it. It is a deriviative of animal urine. That is the only connection I could see.

Isn't urine poisonous to drink?

Urine is sterile. Back in the day, before they had test for diabetes they Dx a patient by tasting the urine, if it was sweet tasting.......I am glad they have other ways to test that now!!

Absolutely correct ! Yes, it is sterile, and yes, many cosmetics and perufmes/colognes have urea in them.

But like Tom, I do wonder what reason this girl had for drinking hers?

The other night I caught an old episode of CSI and the "case" on there was drinking her urine to save her youthful appearance, as suggested by some doctor on the show.- according to my instructor, alot of people do drink their own urine for some old wives tail they have heard.

yes it's sterile, but all i can say is yuck!!

There was a mom who brought her baby to a hospital where I worked with a nasty green conjunctivitis.

she reported that she had been putting urine on the baby's eyes to try and clear it up.

An old wives tale someone had told her.

Unfortunately this was not the baby's most problem.

I don't know what to tell you? Maybe this girl has a psych history then watched the old CSI case and thought WOW!!! Great Idea!!!

So how did this mom and her daughter turn out?:uhoh3:

Believe it or not, we got into a big discussion about this in A&P...my prof started it by giving us this weird visual of a chef in the kidneys "cooking" up urine...I forget what the original point was, but then somebody brought up drinking your urine if stranded, etc. She said (prof) that yes, you can do that, and its perfectly safe (since urine is sterile) but you couldn't let it sit around, cause it will start developing nasty bacteria within just a few minutes of voiding...

Gulp 'er down warm huh? lol

That is just gross.

That's why I hate it when men put their urinals on the bedside table. Too easy for them to start drinking it.

Shudder!!!:uhoh3:
