Hired for one shift but scheduled for another!

I was recently hired into an ED as a part-time RN, evening shifts. I was also told that I will have to work two winter holidays. I have been orienting on the unit for three days and the new schedule has come out. Most of my shifts are starting at 0830. This will not work for my family situation and does not really seem like an evening shift to me. Also I am scheduled for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and new Years Eve, all twelve hour shifts. I want to talk to my manager but do not want to seem like a trouble maker just starting the job. ADVICE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

Just curious- Why did you post here, rather than simply talk to your boss?

Talk to your manager about your schedule. If she/he can work something out then great, if not you can always resign.

Word has it that during interviews, some of our recruits are being told that they'll be able to go on days within a few months of starting. The reality is, though, that shift selection is by unit seniority and that there are many people in front of them who will snap up what few openings arise.

At our joint, the path to days starts on nights and then progresses through the off-shifts and finally to days. Some folks stay on days for a while after orientation but eventually get dumped to the bottom of the night-shift list.

Been a nurse for almost five years and have worked almost every single holiday! Thats part of being a nurse!

Talk to your supervisor .. may be a simple explanation for it.

In my neck of the woods, New Year's Eve is not a holiday.

Here, the winter holidays are Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. How many of those you have to work will be dictated by unit policy. In my experience, working 2 out of 3 is not out of the norm.

I would be willing to bet that this is your *orientation* schedule, on days, because that is the preceptor they want you to be with, and once you are off orientation, they will schedule you into your evening slot.

But, as others have suggested, the person to ask is your scheduler, not us.

Same thing happened to me with my very first job. I just started filling out applications and got hired somewhere else.
