"Get out of here... go do some 'doctor' stuff..."

I work at a busy Level I trauma center with some renowned attending physicians. I stumble across their names when I read citation lists and textbook contributor lists.

The other day, the attending came out of a room and said, "The patient just had diarrhea all over the gurney. I directed her to the bathroom but you need to get a commode in there." I was just in the middle of a med pass and said, "I'll be right there."

I grabbed a commode and walked in just in time to see the attending carrying in some linens. "Oh, get out of here doc... go do some doctor stuff... I got this." She smiled and said, "No, I'm not busy right now" and finished making the bed which she'd already cleaned.

I was flabbergasted... and humbled by her act of service toward the patient and toward me. I already respected the lady for her doctoring but was just blown away at her attitude of service and belief that no task is beneath her.

A servants heart is such a beautiful blessing!! Refreshing and hopeful!! Thank you for sharing. :inlove:

That is great! There is a surgeon where I work that comes in early for rounds. If we are swamped and need help getting people up/ transfers etc...he will help. That is true compassion as far I as I am concerned!

It happens at times but only had it happen two or three times in 20 years.

It is great to see all members of the team pitch in and help when needed. Just don't happen often enough. esp in a teaching hospital.

We (and our patients) would all be so lucky to have a doctor like that one!!! Make sure that doc understands how much you appreciate her!

One day, I had a confused patient become very agitated. She stormed into the nursing station and was demanding to go home immediately. She began to kick, punch and spit at the nurses. We were trying to gently redirect her back to her room, but she wasn't having it. I had my hand on one of her arms as she was kicking another nurse, trying to guide her to her room.

The entire time, one of our docs (who is WELL known for his lack of bedside manner and abrupt/rude way of interacting with nurses... no one likes to be around when he comes in)... was sitting in the corner acting like he had no clue what was happening.

The patient became increasingly agitated and would not listen to us (she was usually fairly easily redirected). Much to my surprise, I look up and the doctor is walking toward me and the patient. He gently took her other arm and helped me guide her back to her room. He even stayed in her room with me until she calmed down.

I still think he's an arrogant donkey, but now I know that he really does have the nurses' backs, so he did gain a little respect from me.

I work with a few MDs in my ER who have to write an order for us to retake a pts HR even though it takes a second to put a probe on their finger... So the other day when one of the docs administered an enema for a constipated pt I was beyond flabbergasted!!!

Uh, frustrates me when I see orders for things you should already be doing, like rechecking a vs after an intervention.. But I was reminded that sadly some won't do it without order lol

I'm laughing out loud right now! I had a doc knock and enter a patient's room without waiting for anyone to call him in today. I was in mid-dressing change on the patient's wound on her buttocks. He opens the door immediately after knocking, sees what I'm doing, gets this hysterical "deer in the headlights" look on his face (like he's never seen the human body before... couldn't see anything from the door anyway as I had the patient FACING the door!) and BACKS out of the room! LOL Priceless... especially considering that this was the doc that has the worst reputation at our facility! LOL

In stark contrast to this attending was one of the medicine interns doing an ED rotation who was coming out of a room of a new patient just as I was coming in and said to me, "He needs to be in a gown."

I tossed him a gown and said, "Hey man, take off your shirt and pants and put this on."

To the intern I said, "The gowns are right here... next time, you can handle that yourself."

She glared at me and walked off.

I love nearly all of *my* docs... attendings and PGYs... the rotators... ummm, they're hit-and-miss.

Most of our docs do their own digital disimpactions. Always impresses me!

I have yet to have one of our docs ask a nurse to do a disimpaction for them, they have always done their own. Sweet!

My first job was in OR and the surgeons and anesthesia never helped us clean or move pts. Now that I'm in ER, the docs seem to help with everything! They clean pts, act like security guards when patients get crazy...yesterday one of them walked a pt's family to the vending machine. I love that they don't act like they're too good to be human because they have MD behind their name. Love our ED docs!
