Questions about DNP's

Does anybody else feel like the DNP programs are a bit of an insult to nurses who just want to be nurses? It seems like there are some who are just after a bigger piece of the pie and fatter paychecks and not better care for their patients!!!

I work with a group of physicians and they're all pretty bright. I can't see how NP's (no matter how smart) can think that they can practice independently without even close to the amount of training that MD's have to go through.

I mean ONE year of medical residency is more clinical time than the DNP "residencies." How do the licensing boards sleep at night?

DNP residencies are an insult to nurses! They're a slap in the face to Doctors! They endanger patients by supplying them with mid-levels who know just enough to be dangerous. If you gals (guys too ;P ) didn't want to be nurses, then why didn't you apply to medical school? I know there's a shortage for primary care and I think NP's have done a GREAT job filling the void but I think these new DNP 'specialties' are irresponsible.

hahaha i AM a Troll!!!!!

thanks for the good laughs ladies!

I needed a break from studying REAL doctor stuff (you wouldn't understand so I won't even try) and you've supplied EXACTLY the entertainment I was looking for.

Every time a PA-C gets hired over a "Nursing Doctor" and angel gets its wings.

LOL

Awesome, very professional. You make your profession proud.

I know lots of MD's are very arrogant (not the ones I work with, but I know what you're saying)

I just find it insulting.....that's all.

It almost seems like these RN's and NP's wanted to be MD's to begin with, couldn't get accepted into Medical School, then chose to be Nurses as a backup!!!! Only now they're too good for us so they're sneaking in through the back door so they can be "doctors" just like they always dreamed.

I even Know a DNP and she calls herself Dr. to the patients. One patient pointed out that she was a nurse and the DNP actually told the pt. that there are now 3 kinds of doctors.... Allopaths, Osteopaths, and Nursing Doctors and that Nursing Doctors are (and I quote) "Full Physicians"

Isn't that Illegal?

the DNP is a doctor. i will say that claiming a professional credential (physician) that one does not posses is unprofessional and i find it hard to believe that the DNP actually said that. As i noted before, med school isn't an exclusive club for mensa members and frankly find it a it patronizing that you believe DNPs just couldn't get into to med school.

P.S. NP's are okay for primary care, but lots get too big for their britches. No reason for them to be trying to move into the medical specialties. They'll get hit with malpractice SO FAST because they have no clue what they're doing.

Some DNP 'degrees' are being offered online. ONLINE!!!! Are you kidding me!??!? ONLINE!

*facepalms*

Depends upon the type of DNP program. Not all Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees are designed for the bedside clinical setting.

Many are focused upon research and leadership roles.

At least I didn't earn my "doctorate" (if that's what you want to call it) online.

ONLINE!!!! ahhahha

I don't think you understand the approach to health that DNP's take vs the approach that MD's take. Not every illness/injury needs to be treated by an MD. A DNP can handle the majority of medical problems that patients present to ER's or to a medical with.

What happened to pt. care you ask--DNP's spend more time with patients than MD's so pt. care actually improves. Anyone with a doctorate can call themselves Dr. Why would a DNP be any different than a someone who calls himself Dr. that has a doctorate in art, history or biology?

I too, think we a TROLL! You should be very proud of yourself. I predict you will not be successful in the medical field.

Wasn't there a requirement to have to post so many times before you could start a thread? It kept bozo's like this off our forum.

You obviously don't have the self discipline or knowledge it takes to complete online classes and need to be spoon fed your book knowledge.

I'm done with the troll. As is common with trolls - no cogent argument is presented, no evidence supplied, no counter-point to any argument raised. The troll merely acts to raise emotional tension.

In it for the money? HA! My mother is an FNP and she's not exactly rolling in money. And anyone intelligent and hard working enough to get through a DNP program could certainly make it in med school. If they were in it for the money, that's the route they would have taken. I don't understand why it's so difficult for you to believe nurses actually want to advance their careers as NURSES.

Oh, and if ever make to DNP myself, you can sure bet I'm going to want to use the title I'd have earned. Would I call myself a physician? No, but I would proudly make known my credentials as a Dr of nursing practice.

Wow, how much of the AMA Kool-aid have you drank.

1. Where did you see anything about pay going up by getting your DNP? Absolutely nothing I have seen or when the past president of the AACN came and talked to my class was there any speculation that pay would increase d/t getting your DNP.

2. DNP is not about being in a contest with physicians, if you haven't noticed nurses are about the only healthcare professional that haven't moved to a clinical doctorate degree (Pharmacists, PT, OT, ST, psychologists, etc. already have clinical doctorate degrees). What is it about nurses getting their doctorate degree that scares physicians so much?

3. DNPs aren't going to replace physicians. There isn't one nursing group that I know of that is even suggesting that DNP prepared nurses are going to be able to replace physicians.

4. You really need to invest some time in a literature search on comparative care between physicians and APN. There is study after study that show that APNs give just as good as care or better than physicians. http://www.aanp.org/NR/rdonlyres/34E7FF57-E071-4014-B554-FF02B82FF2F2/0/QualityofNPPractice4pages.pdf

Looks like you need to go back and take a basic English and spelling course, too!

why the animosity when a nurse moves into the specialty of providing primary care as a doctoral prepared nurse?

Isn't it obvious? A DNP stole her tuna sandwich from the fridge in the lounge, of course.
