Douglas College Psychiatric Nursing 2014

World Canada CA Programs

Published

For the sake of simplicity, I created a new thread.

How many points are you expecting? I should end up with 12 which hopefully gives me a good chance

What was the cutoff for the previous intake?

Hi yes I'm getting discouraged. I want the diploma program but i applied for both as that's what they said to do at the info session. I wish they were not taking the diploma program away.

I didn't know that they were. I applied to both as well. Cross your fingers.. I hope we'll hear in a month or so. I'm taking some classes this fall, registering for them in a couple weeks. Are you taking any?

I've been doing on line English with Thompson rivers university they have bio too. Yeah they say that the employers want the bachelors degree so that's why they are fazing it out? Just like the did with the RN diploma

Even if I get into the diploma program, I will probably file the paperwork to get the degree instead in second year. I already have a BA, so I have many of the classes completed already. Just hoping to get into the diploma program to get through the degree faster. >.>

I guess it's just a waiting game now. I guess there's always Stenberg

Yeah if your willing to pay like 20-30k more than Douglas to go to a private school like that

Stenberg is actually discontinuing the diploma program at the end of this year. I think they also have on more intake for the RPN program there. Bachelors is now the new standard entry to practice because RPNs are now considered primary healthcare providers. Also, I went to stenberg, that school sucks and I regret it.

Monark, can you tell me a little about why Stenberg sucks? I have a friend who is contemplating taking the program there as she couldn't get into Douglas after applying several times.

The staff/instructors are not qualified to teach. Not one instructor in that institution has a masters degree, only the basic minimum plus experience. Example: RPNs teaching have RPN diplomas plus experience, majority do not have bachelors. The staff in general are unqualified, concerns are not addressed, only interested in profit. The drop out rate for nursing (LPN and RPN) is high. Example: i had a woman teaching my co concurrent disorders class, her background was a diploma in human resources with a history of depression and alcoholism, hardly qualified to teach a class in mental health.

Stenberg College is not a college, it is an institution. They are regulated by PCTIA..which they are coached what to say/do when they arrive. The first aid they provide is not sufficient for employment (HCP) when cpr plus AED and wound care is usually required. The instructors also play favorites with students, and if your in a program, then the chances are that instructor is your only instructor the the duration of your program. (I had one instructor an entire 6 months)

Not a good school..tell your friend to upgrade and do her bio's; she will most likely get in. I dont have a university degree or diploma and I am at 11 points..

I've heard good and bad about all schools. Never know what to believe. I have a co-worker whose wife is a nurse and works with students who says that Sprott Shaw and UBC turn out the worst nursing students and that most employers would prefer someone from just about anywhere else. It surprises me, because I thought UBC would be a good program, but maybe 2 years isn't enough.

I applied to Kwantlen for Nursing for January, but the cost is so much more than Douglas. I have 17 for my PNUR score at Douglas as expected.

I think its hard to judge an entire school on a single personal opinion. You will always hear negative and positive.

So this is my second time applying. I got accepted for September 2014 but because I didn't have bio 1203 completed I was told I had to wait until september 2015 to begin. Instead I declined my offer and reapplied for January. I should have 14 points this time and with my score last semester of 12 I was accepted in to the degree and diploma program

I have a previous diploma from another school..is it actually true taking a seat in the diploma program and switching to the degree is faster than doing the degree?

I agree, it is hard to judge a school by one opinion. However, I believe there is a big difference in the quality of education between public and private schools - Sprott Shaw and Stenberg are private. I am declining my spot to Douglas RPN for September 2014 because I was accepted to UBC. It is shame because I have actually wanted to do the RPN program for about 10 years now, but waiting an entire year after being accepted is too long. I am a mature student so I want to finish sooner than later. One spot will open up on the wait list for a lucky individual :) @Kirota, you should apply to the Kwantlen Post- Baccalaureate program - it is 27 months and the majority is online.
