Douglas College Psychiatric Nursing 2014
I did the first aid when it was offered at Douglas College last semester. Maybe they'll do it again? It was pretty cheap, too.

I'll be coming from New West by bus, still takes an hour or more. But, I'll see you all in January!

I got accepted into the January intake of the psych diploma program. :)

My deadline for paperwork was July 25th or something. I'm in the diploma program.

I have to get a lot of shots, even though I already had a lot of them in 2010 when I worked in the hospital. Sigh... I'll have to pay for them at a travel clinic too, so more $$$$.

There was no mention of first aid in the paperwork that was sent to me, so I am waiting. It's bad enough I have to pay for a doctor's visit for paperwork, and pay for vaccinations from the travel clinic because the earliest public health nurse appointment I can get is in October. Sigh. Pay pay pay pay pay. Seems to be what nursing is about. >.

I had 17 points, so pretty high. How many do you have? They sent me the paperwork but now I only have until July 24th to pay $350 down, have a doctors exam, and my immunization record, and a criminal record check. They don't give you much time!

I picked diploma so I could get right into PNUR courses. I am hopeful that I can switch to the degree program for 2nd year, but even if not, I can do the degree completion pretty quickly after graduation. Anyone else getting into the diploma program? I'd love to meet new people!

Yeah, I've taken A&P and University Writing. Second semester would be the same. Hopefully means a cheaper first year for me. :)

Tell me how it goes.. Especially about the A&P if you are at a C too. I'm curious as to the program costs also. The admissions advisors only say that it's $40,000 for the 4 years. I would like to know how much I have to save up for the first year. :)

If my Microbiology course that I got a B in counts for my Bio course for admission, the program continuance requirements only say that a cumulative GPA of 2.33 is required, with a grade no lower than a C in all required coursework. KPU 2014-15 University Calendar | Nursing: Bachelor of Science in Nursing Soooo... I'm really hoping I won't have to take the class over again. You got your offer for January intake, or September? The deadline isn't even here for the January intake... So, are they really slow?

If you have completed the first year of the diploma program, then you are farther advanced than second year students of the degree program. The first year of the degree program is almost entirely university courses, and no PNUR courses. The first year of the diploma is almost entirely PNUR courses. It would make no sense for them to take a 2nd year diploma student and put them into the second year of the degree program. I think you're getting confused by the fact they also have a direct entry into second year option, which is when you take the university courses and ask for direct entry into the second year of Psych Nursing. That's a harder route, and dependent on available second year seats. It's more difficult to get into the diploma program, I'm not sure if it's just fewer seats or what, but the first year degree program has far more seat availability. If you want direct entry into second year, you are relying on people who have dropped out of the program. If you take the psych diploma program, your seat in most PNUR courses is already guaranteed due to your program seat (except the two they save you a seat in the summer session for). Long story short, if you get into the diploma program, and already have the majority of the courses for the 1st year of Psych Nursing Degree completed - do it. If you don't have the majority of the courses already completed, don't do it and take the degree instead. Personally, if I get accepted into both the diploma and degree programs, I will probably take the diploma and ask before my second year to be allowed to graduate with a degree (fill out the form, take the 2 extra courses). I already have the majority of the first year courses for the psych nursing degree completed. It would take 3 years.

That isn't true. There is a form that you can fill out during your second semester of the diploma program, but it MUST be done before your second year if you want to get the degree at the end instead of the diploma. They save you spots in two classes like I said before, during the summer they offer you those spots. You MUST graduate with your diploma cohort, so fulfilling the additional courses that are required are on your own time, and on the application you must say how you plan to complete those. I'm not sure how often it is granted, but it is a viable option.

I just applied, though I don't really know what to expect. My University GPA should be around 3.55, which is unfortunately because of A&P. Without that, my GPA was 3.7 :) Amazing what a C can do to a good GPA. I'm hopeful that it is enough. Do they have quick turnaround on applications? I am likely to get into Douglas' Psychiatric Nursing program, but would still prefer an RN over an RPN. Good luck to us.
