  1. I did the first aid when it was offered at Douglas College last semester. Maybe they'll do it again? It was pretty cheap, too.
  2. I'll be coming from New West by bus, still takes an hour or more. But, I'll see you all in January!
  3. I got accepted into the January intake of the psych diploma program. :)
  4. My deadline for paperwork was July 25th or something. I'm in the diploma program.
  5. I have to get a lot of shots, even though I already had a lot of them in 2010 when I worked in the hospital. Sigh... I'll have to pay for them at a travel clinic too, so more $$$$.
  6. There was no mention of first aid in the paperwork that was sent to me, so I am waiting. It's bad enough I have to pay for a doctor's visit for paperwork, and pay for vaccinations from the travel clinic because the earliest public health nurse appointment I can get is in October. Sigh. Pay pay pay pay pay. Seems to be what nursing is about. >.
  7. I had 17 points, so pretty high. How many do you have? They sent me the paperwork but now I only have until July 24th to pay $350 down, have a doctors exam, and my immunization record, and a criminal record check. They don't give you much time!
  8. I picked diploma so I could get right into PNUR courses. I am hopeful that I can switch to the degree program for 2nd year, but even if not, I can do the degree completion pretty quickly after graduation. Anyone else getting into the diploma program? I'd love to meet new people!
  9. I got offered a seat in either the degree or the diploma program, now I have to decide which I want. Agh. :S
  10. Yeah, I've taken A&P and University Writing. Second semester would be the same. Hopefully means a cheaper first year for me. :)
  11. Tell me how it goes.. Especially about the A&P if you are at a C too. I'm curious as to the program costs also. The admissions advisors only say that it's $40,000 for the 4 years. I would like to know how much I have to save up for the first year. :)
  12. If my Microbiology course that I got a B in counts for my Bio course for admission, the program continuance requirements only say that a cumulative GPA of 2.33 is required, with a grade no lower than a C in all required coursework. KPU 2014-15 University Calendar | Nursing: Bachelor of Science in Nursing Soooo... I'm really hoping I won't have to take the class over again. You got your offer for January intake, or September? The deadline isn't even here for the January intake... So, are they really slow?
  13. If you have completed the first year of the diploma program, then you are farther advanced than second year students of the degree program. The first year of the degree program is almost entirely university courses, and no PNUR courses. The first year of the diploma is almost entirely PNUR courses. It would make no sense for them to take a 2nd year diploma student and put them into the second year of the degree program. I think you're getting confused by the fact they also have a direct entry into second year option, which is when you take the university courses and ask for direct entry into the second year of Psych Nursing. That's a harder route, and dependent on available second year seats. It's more difficult to get into the diploma program, I'm not sure if it's just fewer seats or what, but the first year degree program has far more seat availability. If you want direct entry into second year, you are relying on people who have dropped out of the program. If you take the psych diploma program, your seat in most PNUR courses is already guaranteed due to your program seat (except the two they save you a seat in the summer session for). Long story short, if you get into the diploma program, and already have the majority of the courses for the 1st year of Psych Nursing Degree completed - do it. If you don't have the majority of the courses already completed, don't do it and take the degree instead. Personally, if I get accepted into both the diploma and degree programs, I will probably take the diploma and ask before my second year to be allowed to graduate with a degree (fill out the form, take the 2 extra courses). I already have the majority of the first year courses for the psych nursing degree completed. It would take 3 years.
  14. That isn't true. There is a form that you can fill out during your second semester of the diploma program, but it MUST be done before your second year if you want to get the degree at the end instead of the diploma. They save you spots in two classes like I said before, during the summer they offer you those spots. You MUST graduate with your diploma cohort, so fulfilling the additional courses that are required are on your own time, and on the application you must say how you plan to complete those. I'm not sure how often it is granted, but it is a viable option.
  15. I just applied, though I don't really know what to expect. My University GPA should be around 3.55, which is unfortunately because of A&P. Without that, my GPA was 3.7 :) Amazing what a C can do to a good GPA. I'm hopeful that it is enough. Do they have quick turnaround on applications? I am likely to get into Douglas' Psychiatric Nursing program, but would still prefer an RN over an RPN. Good luck to us.
  16. If you have a majority of year one done, then switching from the diploma to the degree program can be viable. Provided the transfer is approved. I asked a while ago, basically you fill out a form, you're expected to fulfill the requirements for the degree program and graduate with your diploma cohort. They save you a spot in the summer for 2 courses (The Microbio one, and ..another one..) but you have to take them when the spot is saved. I'm an older student myself, and I want to get into the profession as soon as possible. However, I only have a 3 year degree, and not a 4 year degree to apply into the Post-Bacc program at Kwantlen. At least the 4 year program wouldn't be a lot of repeating courses, but the cost seems much higher than Douglas. I have so many transfer issues due to my old University not requiring "English" specified classes, and I took regional literature and history classes to fulfill the written English requirement.
  17. I've heard good and bad about all schools. Never know what to believe. I have a co-worker whose wife is a nurse and works with students who says that Sprott Shaw and UBC turn out the worst nursing students and that most employers would prefer someone from just about anywhere else. It surprises me, because I thought UBC would be a good program, but maybe 2 years isn't enough. I applied to Kwantlen for Nursing for January, but the cost is so much more than Douglas. I have 17 for my PNUR score at Douglas as expected.
  18. Even if I get into the diploma program, I will probably file the paperwork to get the degree instead in second year. I already have a BA, so I have many of the classes completed already. Just hoping to get into the diploma program to get through the degree faster. >.>
  19. I didn't know that they were. I applied to both as well. Cross your fingers.. I hope we'll hear in a month or so. I'm taking some classes this fall, registering for them in a couple weeks. Are you taking any?
  20. I don't have points posted yet either, but they're still going through my transcripts. Who knows how long it'll take. Don't get discouraged though, I heard there are fewer applicants in general for the winter start date. Are you going for diploma or degree?
  21. I talked to the registrars office, and they said: You will not be able to access Biol 2200 (Pathophysiology) unless you are in the Academic Foundations in Nursing Cert. program and I am sorry I do not know when it will be opened for applicants.. perhaps 2015 or 2016. That kind of uncertainty isn't something I want to deal with anymore. So, I've decided that I'm going to just go through with the RPN program if I get a seat, and call it a sign. :) I will probably take an English course and Psychology course this fall. I have a Bachelor of Arts, but because I didn't take specifically "English" courses, I have to do them. Boo. I'll be a semester behind you if I get into the January intake, but then you can tutor me. Haha.
  22. At least you got to the interview stage at UBC! Sometimes, things work out in a way that is better for you, even if you don't think it is. 17 people dropping out might seem hard to believe - but life happens. You might still have a chance. :) I finished my A&P at UBC, and have looked at most of the other BSc Nursing programs - and either they're just as competitive as UBC, or waitlisted to eternity. I'm fairly sure I'll get a seat offer for RPN, because I should have 17 points out of the 20. If only the BSc program had the same point style! Haha. Oh well. :) I don't mind the first year being slack for me, means I can work and who knows, if they have a 2nd year seat open up maybe they can transition me in. I've already taken a Microbio course, so that's a little off year 2 for me too. :)
  23. I'm applying for the January intake. I would rather go into the BSc Nursing, but I just can't wait as long as it would take (I'm no spring chicken). I wonder how long after the deadline that they start making seat offers. I applied at UBC, but the competition was incredibly fierce this year and even though I felt competitive, apparently I wasn't enough. I'm hoping it's not as hostile as all that. The admissions department isn't nearly as friendly as I would like, but it's what it is. They probably get a ton of the same questions so it gets irksome. Anyone planning on taking any of the first year stuff for RPN this Fall? I'd love to meet some people since I recently moved from Winnipeg to try to get into Nursing out here. :)
  24. I got my rejection notice too. Despite the fact that I worked on hospital wards as a phlebotomist for 3 years, and worked in a group home setting for disabled adults for 7 years - I just ranked a 3 on the supplemental. I don't know what they're looking for, but I was pretty sure I had enough experience in health care to know that being a nurse is what I wanted. Ah well.. Guess it's not for me after all.
  25. Got to love the stress of all this.. not. LOL. It looks like the offers were given to people outside of the province (Go Calgary people) possibly first because they have to make travel arrangements and such, and would be the ones most likely to say 'yeah, no thanks, I got a closer offer'. That's my hope. It is going to be a stressful week...
