Douglas College Psychiatric Nursing 2014

For the sake of simplicity, I created a new thread.

How many points are you expecting? I should end up with 12 which hopefully gives me a good chance

What was the cutoff for the previous intake?

At an info session I was told there were 35 seats for degree..but that seems kind of low so who knows. I was made a seat offer and am now waiting for finalization after my medical/immunization stuff

I found douglas to create a really competitive environment.

I was bullied by the girls and when I made a complaint bullied by the teachers

I find compared to kwantlen that they are severely lacking in lab instruction. we did very little in labs. its wasn't organized at all

I would say I faced a very hostile environment at that school: zero support, a lot of animosity towards males. the behaviour of the other students was terrible. cliquey. and very hostile. I was told to f off by one girl. laugh at in class constantly.

I made a complaint and was told to shut up by the head. and do whatever we say if u ever want a career in nursing. I wasn't allowed a lawyer, family member or an advocate. I was forced to sign documents that were inaccurate

in class I faced the same I had teacher that said don't blame us if u fail. another said don't mess with me in class or ill get you in clinical.

I found douglas college very hostile while I found kwantlen college to be supportive, helpful. the teachers dedicated hours to help me in labs. and had open office hours where I could discuss my essays and tests or any material that was unclear

I'm applying for the January intake. I would rather go into the BSc Nursing, but I just can't wait as long as it would take (I'm no spring chicken). I wonder how long after the deadline that they start making seat offers. I applied at UBC, but the competition was incredibly fierce this year and even though I felt competitive, apparently I wasn't enough.

I'm hoping it's not as hostile as all that. The admissions department isn't nearly as friendly as I would like, but it's what it is. They probably get a ton of the same questions so it gets irksome.

Anyone planning on taking any of the first year stuff for RPN this Fall? I'd love to meet some people since I recently moved from Winnipeg to try to get into Nursing out here. :)

Hi Kirota,

I saw you on the UBC forum as well. I hear you about the competition being so fierce at UBC! I got an interview, but then was only wait listed #17, so to be honest I don't have a ton of hope. I was offered a seat in the BPN program for September as well and I got my admissions offer fairly early, I believe in February, you can check my history for more detail. From talking with other students at Douglas, that is where I did my Anatomy and Physiology, most offers were handed out early. People that I have spoken to have had 12 points to be accepted. Taking classes to start off with is good so apply as a pre-psychiatric nursing student, but if you get accepted into the program, you are usually given a seat for year one and can't access the year two classes until you are in year two. Feel free to ask anymore questions.

At least you got to the interview stage at UBC! Sometimes, things work out in a way that is better for you, even if you don't think it is. 17 people dropping out might seem hard to believe - but life happens. You might still have a chance. :)

I finished my A&P at UBC, and have looked at most of the other BSc Nursing programs - and either they're just as competitive as UBC, or waitlisted to eternity. I'm fairly sure I'll get a seat offer for RPN, because I should have 17 points out of the 20. If only the BSc program had the same point style! Haha. Oh well. :)

I don't mind the first year being slack for me, means I can work and who knows, if they have a 2nd year seat open up maybe they can transition me in. I've already taken a Microbio course, so that's a little off year 2 for me too. :)

Yes, you will get a seat! If you already have microbiology all you would have to take is pathophysiology to apply to the RN at Douglas. It might actually be shorter as you could start right away. Check out that option as well. I have met a lot of people in the RPN program that have good things to say about it, and there are a lot of mature students as well. And, I totally agree that things can just work out in a way that is better for us:) Good luck with your application! Perhaps Ill see you in the program.

I talked to the registrars office, and they said: You will not be able to access Biol 2200 (Pathophysiology) unless you are in the Academic Foundations in Nursing Cert. program and I am sorry I do not know when it will be opened for applicants.. perhaps 2015 or 2016. That kind of uncertainty isn't something I want to deal with anymore.

So, I've decided that I'm going to just go through with the RPN program if I get a seat, and call it a sign. :)

I will probably take an English course and Psychology course this fall. I have a Bachelor of Arts, but because I didn't take specifically "English" courses, I have to do them. Boo. I'll be a semester behind you if I get into the January intake, but then you can tutor me. Haha. :D

I would suggest kwantlen college

I was bullied by students , department heads and clinical teachers till they failed me out

I have degrees from university.all A marks in psych nursing.excellent clinical reviews buy when I complained about the bullying I was failed out

Not a good school if teachers are yelling at to shut up. Won't discuss your work and constantly put you down by threatening you

I was call led mental I'll. To shut up if I ever want a career in nursing. While teachers were teaching I was told by the teacher to not blame them if I fail

Whatever u do don't challenge.complain and keep mouth shut

my score isn't posted yet...i think i only have 6 points :wideyed: it seems like everyone else is a lot higher ugh...

they changed the point system as well.

I remember them saying only 8 seats for the diploma...much more for the degree program

I don't have points posted yet either, but they're still going through my transcripts. Who knows how long it'll take. Don't get discouraged though, I heard there are fewer applicants in general for the winter start date. Are you going for diploma or degree?
