Wishing to work in California, from another state

U.S.A. California

since there have been so many threads started on this, thought that a sticky would answer most questions about this.

1. you must endorse to california, you do not transfer a license. you will continue to maintain an active license in the original state until it expires if you do not renew it.

2. you need to follow the license by endorsement application, you can find it on ca brn website.

3. california requires a completed set of transcripts from your nursing school before they will issue you a permanent license.

4. they need verification from your state licensing authority. if ca has received that or the state is part of nursys, then you can actually go to the brn in sacramento and get a temporary license issued that same day.

5. otherwise, expect it to take about one month for you to receive the license once they have received all documents.

hi suzzane,

I wrote a letter in CA BON whether I can start now applying license by endorsement without the SSN but until now no answer yet from them so I decided to ask this question to you. I came here as tourist ,got a petitioner and will start filing the I-485, I-140, EAD this Friday.I have an active license in NY but I di not work there. Can I start sending the request for my transcript in the Philippines to forward it to CA BON without SSN?

thank you.

Well I sure look forward to all the things I have to go through to get a license when I move to CA next week. I sure wish CA was a compact state - that would make things a whole lot easier.

How much is it for the license? And where can I get my fingerprints done? Do they issue a temporary license until your permanent one arrives? How much does a new LPN start off in CA? And about my school transcripts, I am assuming the board would want "official" ones?

I'm sorry if these questions were already covered. I read the thread for the most part and didn't find the answers.

Thanks in advance.

The LVN license is handled thru another board entirely. CA does not have a BON, they have a Board of Registered Nursing, and then there is an office that handles technical licenses, and that is what is over the LVN license. Not sure what they are going with temporary licenses there anymore, only know current specifics for the RN license.

Transcripts always must be sent by your school in any state, they are never accepted directly by the nurse. As far as fingerprints, they can be done at the Dept of Justice via what is called the LiveScan.

Hi,

I have a quick question for you, I hope it is okay. I am going to be a student in a brand new nursing program starting Jan. 2008. I will be moving to California after I graduate. I know this school will become nationally accredited since it is a part of another school that is already nationally accredited. My question is this, if I register on Nursys will I be able to go to Sacramento and get the permit to work the same day like you talked about on the initial thread, even though the school is not nationally accredited yet? I will have taken my NClex and passed state boards before coming to California. I know Utah is a part of Nursys, any info. you can give would be helpful. Thank you so much!

Makes no difference about the accreditation, it requires that the program offer the required classes that CA needs before you can get licensed here.

If you go to Sacramento, and they have veriification that you actually hold a license in another state from that BON; whether thru Nursys, or directly from the BON, they will issue you a temporary license. A permit is the word that is used when you have never taken the NCLEX exam, but have met all requirement for it. Once they have received your transcripts and verified that, that is when you get the permanent license.

CA is quite specific about the hours that are required for you to get licensed there, if missing any, you will be required to make them up. And just a word of caution: just because a sister school has been approved, it does not mean that the other school will be. Alot usually has to do with the passage rate on exams, etc., and that is not determined until after there are classes that have taken that exam. Never before.

I personally never recommend a new program that is just starting. You have no idea of what the classes will be like, or what the instructors will be like. Each school has its own identity.

Hi suzanne4,

I am an Indian nurse. I finished my CGFNS and IELTS and I have a valid CGFNS certificate. I also cleared my NCLEX-RN from New Mexico board of nursing. I dont have my EAD( Employment authorisation) and social security number at present. But I've applied for my EAD and my case is pending. I would like to register with california board of nursing. Can you please tell me what I should do! Iam new to USA. So it will be helpful to me if you can explain to me in detail.

Thanks.

If you already have a license from NM, then you will use the CA BRN License by Endorsement application. Without having a SSN# at present, they will provide a temporary license for you that is valid for six months. You just need to follow the requirements on that for a foreign nurse.

They will not issue you a permanent license until you provide them with a SSN#, as well as your school sending in your transcripts. Those are still needed even if you have a license in another state.

And welcome to the US and Allnurses.com:balloons:

So you are saying that

1. You can get your RN license from another state, accredited school?

2. Send in the application to have the license transfered to CAlifornia State Boards, and once that is complete CA will issue a permanent license....?

THis is what I was told at an advisory session.? One month sounds normal for paperwork transfers and etc.

THANK YOU....my last post was before I read all the other threads. THANK YOU for this Thread!!!! It has answered all my questions,,,,even the endorsement understanding in this context.

You are very correct that it can be easier to just take a day and go to Sacramento for the process. :) and get a temporary one to get to work and help a medical team help the community. :)

CA is quite specific about the hours that are required for you to get licensed there, if missing any, you will be required to make them up.

Suzanne (or anyone else) do you know the hours that are required to be licensed in CA? I have tried searching and have been unable to locate this info anywhere. Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks!

Can someone just give me a link to the website where I - as an LVN - can get the application to endorse? The "CA BRN" site apparently is for REGISTERED nurses. Thank you.

Hi all,

Well I've searched the posts and don't see an answer yet to my question, so....

I'm trying to find WHERE on the BRN website it details the educational requirements for licensure in CA. I can find info about endorsement that refers to the fact that you must meet the educational requirements, but no further information on what those requirements are. More specifically, what they're looking for on transcripts to see if you meet their requirements, etc.

Thanks!

:)
