What are my options for Nursing Programs?

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

I'm new to the Phoenix area and am wondering what are all my options for nursing school? I feel like waiting almost two years to get in to one of the MCC nursing programs is just too long. I already have my BA so I'm looking for a quick route.

I can't relocate to Flagstaff or Tucson because my husband has a job in Maricopa.

I appreciate any opinions/advice!

Hello! I am from Maricopa too! I second that! The waiting list of nursing programs at MCC here takes atleast 18 months-2 years; and I am never taking that route, that is insane! So, my plan now is to take the traditional BSN at ASU/NAU,atleast I don't have to hold an ADN/AAS in nursing diploma/Nursing program certificate, they don't have a waiting list but they are expensive and competitive.

Maybe you can do the accelerated program since you already have a BA.

become an lpn at gwcc or maricopa skills center then just transition into block 3 at CC. i heard there is a minimum waitlist, if any for the lpn route. just think you need to be a cna to enter the program, there is no waitlist for cna. i only waited 18 months to get into the rn program, my time stamp was june 2008, i started in january 2010. there use to be a banner fellows program, but i don't know if they still do those cohorts.

if you are going to get into one of the private colleges keep in the back of your mind if you will make the money back working 18 months earlier. my degree @ gwcc was only $5000, but I knew if i became an RN 18 months earlier I wouldn't make back the difference to go to chamberlain or grand canyon.

In 2012 (which probably means Fall semester of 2012) Arizona State is going to start their accelerated BSN Program. Either 16 months straight through or 2 full school years, I'm not sure which. You need to make sure that you have the prerequisite sciences and core classes out of the way. (Which they haven't decided on yet, lol) Just assume its the basic human physiology and anatomy, English, chemistry, microbiology, and healthcare related classes.

Watch their website for updates on the program, and schedule a meeting with a counselor to see what your options are.

@Freximus:

Thank you for your post. I have been monitoring this forum for updates on ASU's 2nd degree program. The last I heard from other posters who attended the ASU info sessions last fall, the program was postponed indefinitely. Is the 2012 start something they discussed in a recent info session?

Thanks!

I live in Phoenix and couldn't move either, as my husband has a private practice down here and we have a son and own a house together too. I commuted to NAU and did their accelerated program. Mine was a 19 month program but it is now a 12 month program. It was not that bad...only had to be there for 1 or 2 days a week for 12 months, as the last 2 semesters were online and I had clinicals down here. I rented a couch with classmates so I had a place to crash when my clasess and clincals were back to back. Something to at least consider. I was not okay with waiting so long, and since I already had a BA, there was no need to do so!

I spoke to one of the advisors from ASU a few weeks back and she said she won't find out if she has received funding for this program until later this summer. I'm hoping that funding goes through though...I'd love to get my second degree from ASU =)

How far is NAU from the phoenix area?

Where do you live at in copa?

How far is NAU from the phoenix area?

140 miles from my home in central Phoenix and it took me exactly 2 hours from door to door. I bet it would be a bit farther tho, from Maricopa :-(

Have you considered somewhere private like ITT, Chamberlain, etc.? These schools will charge you A LOT more than the CC; however, by starting now and not waiting the 2 years to get into MCC, you get into the workforce sooner. Do the math--I think it works out about the same to be honest. That's what I'm doing.

I am in Alterra.
